Meade Series 5000 Plössl Eyepieces
Meade Series 5000 Plössls have a 60° apparent field of view – up to 20% wider than most conventional Plössl designs. It is obvious that these are not the traditional four-element design eyepiece invented in 1860 by the Austrian optician (Georg) Simon Plössl. The Meade “Plössls” use five and six element designs more akin to the wide field design invented in 1917 by German optician Heinrich Valentin Erfle, and known by his name.

The Meade Series 5000 Plössls feature very sharp optical performance which delivers a 40% improvement in corrections for chromatic aberration and edge-distortions over these older wide-field designs. They yield the widest possible field of view that is consistent with pinpoint edge-of-field sharpness and contrast.

Premium grade optical glass, with individually tuned multilayer antireflection coatings for maximum light transmission, is standard. The lens edges and all internal metal surfaces are blackened to maximize image contrast. All of the Series 5000 Plössls are parfocal, requiring little or no refocusing when switching eyepieces within the series. They have long eye relief for eyeglass use, with adjustable twist-up rubber eyeguards. A safety groove is cut into the chrome barrels to keep the eyepiece from falling should an eyepiece holder’s thumbscrew loosen slightly during use.
