Vixen Lanthanum (ED) Eyepieces
These Vixen eyepieces have four to eight lenses in proprietary designs. They use a lanthanum ED (Extra-low Dispersion rare earth glass) field lens to provide a uniformly very long 20mm eye relief for eyeglass use, even in the exceptionally short 2.5mm focal length model. The shorter focal lengths use a built-in Barlow lens to achieve high power without reducing the eye relief. Their optical performance approaches that of a Plössl at the center of the field (less so at the edges and with generally lower contrast because of the added lens elements in the shorter focal lengths), but with markedly longer eye relief. They are fully multicoated, with blackened lens edges for higher contrast. Each is threaded for standard color and nebula filters and comes with dust caps for both ends of the eyepiece. A safety groove cut into each chromed barrel catches your focuser’s thumbscrew to keep the eyepiece from falling out of your scope should the thumbscrew accidentally loosen while observing. Each has either a soft fold-down rubber eyecup or a twist-up rubber-rimmed eyecup to shield the eye from ambient light. They are a good choice for those who must wear glasses when observing, at more reasonable price points than some of the other long eye relief designs.
