It surveys 46 constellations and groups of constellations throughout the sky, keyed to their yearly peak visibility. Each of the 46 sky areas includes a full-page three-color map to help you find the featured objects, plus a brief catalog that lists their positions, magnitudes, sizes, etc. Each section also includes extensive descriptions of the visual appearance of each listed object as it appears through amateur telescopes of various apertures, plus history, star lore, and much more.

The book includes 146 color and duotone photos, as well as 116 eyepiece sketches. All of the material has appeared previously as monthly installments of the popular Backyard Astronomer column in Astronomy magazine.
