| Many TeleVue eyepieces –the Radians, Nagler Type 4s, the 55mm Plössl and 41mm Panoptic, etc. – have adjustable height eyeguards that permit comfortable viewing either with or without eyeglasses. They adjust down to let you see an unvignetted view while wearing eyeglasses, and up again to properly position your eye at the correct eyepoint for the best images when not wearing glasses. Other TeleVue eyepieces – such as the 27mm and 35mm Panoptics, and the 32mm and 40mm Plössls – have long eye relief that is comfortable for eyeglass wearers. However, it may be uncomfortably long for those users who don’t wear eyeglasses, making it difficult to keep their eye at the correct eyepoint for the best images. The TeleVue eyeguard extender solves this problem with this latter group of eyepieces for those who don’t wear glasses and have trouble consistently positioning their eye at the correct eyepoint. It is a black anodized aluminum ring with internal anti-reflection threads that attaches in minutes to the top of the eyepiece after removing the existing rubber eyeguard. The rubber eyeguard is then reattached to the top of the extender. The extender raises the eyeguard position by 8mm, usually enough to properly position the eyeguard for comfortable use without eyeglasses. In extreme cases, should more eyeguard height be preferred, the extender is stackable. For example, two extenders can be stacked to add 16mm of eyeguard height. This will typically make the long eye relief of a 40mm Plössl very comfortable for solar observing by blocking out stray daylight to maximize the contrast during white light or hydrogen-alpha viewing. The extender includes 3 lock screws to secure it to the top of an eyepiece, and a spare rubber eyeguard and eyepiece cap (in case yours are lost or damaged.) |
