This is a medium power long eye relief eyepiece for those birders who must wear eyeglasses while observing with Nikon 65mm and 82mm ProStaff spotting scopes. It is designed for general observing under low to average lighting conditions. The optics are fully multicoated, using Nikon’s proprietary antireflection coatings, for high light transmission and contrast.

The eyepiece bayonets into the scope body and locks securely into place. A pushbutton on the scope body unlocks the bayonet so that the eyepiece can be changed in seconds. The eyepiece has a long and soft rubber-rimmed eyecup that twists up and locks in place, shielding the eye from ambient light for better contrast when observing with the unaided eye. The eyecup easily twists back down for eyeglass use.

The eyepiece comes with a rubber eyecup that can be tethered to the eyepiece. This lets you keep the eyepiece protected when traveling, while easily slipping the protective cap off when observing without fear of losing the cap. A protective slip-on plastic dust cover is provided for the spotting scope side of the eyepiece. The eyepiece is packed in a Cordura-type nylon bag with a drawstring top and a loop for attaching it to your spotting scope’s stay-on soft case so it won’t get lost or misplaced in the field.

With a 65mm ProStaff the eyepiece provides 20x magnification, with a wide and bright 3.5mm exit pupil, and a good 105’ field of view of at 1000 yards.

With an 82mm ProStaff the magnification increases to 25x and the exit pupil decreases slightly to a still-bright 3.28mm, while the field of view decreases to 84’ at 1000 yards.

The eye relief is specified as 31.8mm with all scopes, for totally unvignetted eyeglass views. While this is technically correct, the actual usable eye relief will typically measure somewhat less due to the recessing of the eyepiece lens to protect it from being scratched accidentally when the eyecup is in the down position for eyeglass use. A somewhat shorter eye relief than specified is typical of all spotting scope eyepieces.
