| This wide-angle Z-body porro prism has visibly sharper images than any department store binoculars in its very reasonable price range. Its center focus optics use costly BaK-4 prisms and are multicoated for good light transmission and high contrast. It comes in a soft vinyl carrying case, with rolldown rubber eyecups and an eyepiece rainguard. Black rubber armor protects the optics, and molded-in thumb grooves and textured gripping surfaces provide a positive grip in wet weather. With its good light-gathering, 12’ near focus, and reasonably good depth of field, the 8 x 40mm is as good for birding in shadowed woodlands as it is for wide-open glassing in meadows, fields, marshes, etc. You can use an optional adapter #1185L to mount the Legacy on a camera tripod for hands-free observing. The very wide 9 degree field of this Legacy will give you a picture window view of bird feeders, fast-moving sports, and scenic expanses alike, although at the expense of some loss of image sharpness at the edges of the field. For the big picture, at a not very big price, the 8 x 40mm Legacy will fill almost anyone’s optical needs . . . without emptying their bank account. |
