| This center focus H-body roof prism weighs so little that you’ll never have an excuse not to carry a full-sized high-power binocular with you when you’re out and about. The new Zeiss 10 x 30mm Diafun weighs only 15.9 ounces, but delivers all the optical performance you expect from a Zeiss. It is fully multicoated, with phase-coated prisms. It comes in a soft Cordura nylon case with a handy belt loop for no-hands carrying. The sleek body is molded of durable fiber-reinforced composite, with rubber objective lens rims for added protection. The body is tested to survive temperatures of -4 degrees to +140 degrees Fahrenheit without lubricant or sealant failures. It is nitrogen-filled and waterproof, and tested to survive the equivalent of a 30-minute heavy rain at a temperature of 50 degrees F without leaking or fogging. It is tested to survive the equivalent of bouncing around on the unpadded metal floor of a Volkswagen van traveling at 30 mph on rough roads. (Sounds like a number of birding trips we’ve been on.) The 10 x 30mm has soft rolldown rubber eyecups that are slanted to fit the curvature of your face to better block out ambient light. Eye relief is a respectable 13mm. Its wide field, good 14’ near focus, very good depth of field, and superb Zeiss optics make it an excellent all-around binocular – at a very un-Zeiss-like price. |
