| This padded case provides a convenient means for transporting and storing the Orion Atlas German equatorial mount, including the tripod. It will also work with other similar size German mounts. The case is designed to hold a refractor optical tube, as well as the mount, but will not hold a reflector or SCT optics. Aside from making it easy to transport the mount and tripod in one convenient package, the case keeps your mount and optics clean and well-protected from accidental dings and scrapes.
The case is triangular in cross-section. It measures 55" long x 14" wide across the base x 14" tall. It is made of heavy, water-resistant dual layer (polyester/nylon) material. Shock-absorbing foam padding is sewn into the smooth snag-resistant nylon inner lining for maximum protection. A padded divider runs the length of the interior of the case to keep a refractor optical tube separated from the Atlas mount. Velcro strips hold the divider pressed firmly against the refractor optical tube and its attached rings to keep the optical tube from shifting during transport. The Velcro strips will also hold the divider out of the way if you are not carrying your optics in the case.
A zipper runs along the top of the triangular case from end to end, allowing easy access to its interior so you can slide your mount in and out in seconds. The counterweight shaft is generally removed from the mount and inserted into the case separately. Wide Velcro straps in the bottom of the case hold the counterweight shaft with attached counterweights in place during transport. The mount tripod is collapsed and the equatorial head and tripod are placed into the case as a single unit with the equatorial head at the opposite end of the case from the counterweight shaft.
Sewn-in carry straps wrap completely around the case for support. A padded handle on the straps fits comfortably in the hand. A separate shoulder strap provides a no-hands carrying capability.
Comfortable to carry, forgiving of bumps and bruises, this very protective case makes it easy to take your German equatorial mount out to your observing site in one trip, rather than having to transport it piecemeal. But, aside from the convenience factor, it provides very inexpensive protection for your expensive mount.
