  Tip-to-Tip Distance  Tip-to-Tip Distance

The custom-made JMI Large Wheeley Bar with its 10" all-terrain pneumatic wheel and pull handle upgrade gives you an easy way to roll your assembled Losmandy G-11 mount and optical tube from garage to backyard patio or driveway observing site, even over soft, rough, or uneven ground. It also lets you travel to dark sky observing sites, assemble your scope conveniently near where your car is parked, then move the assembled scope to the actual observing site away from the car. You don’t have to take out the telescope and G-11 mount in a number of heavy individual pieces and struggle to lift and assemble them in the dark. Simply roll your fully assembled telescope to your observing site and start observing.

This Wheeley Bar is a customized special order universal model designed specifically for the Losmandy G-11 mount, although it will also work with the older Celestron CG-11 and CG-14 mounts and the Losmandy HGM200. This Wheeley Bar is designed to be used with the tripod legs fully retracted to keep the center of gravity low and allow the telescope to be moved through doorways more easily. Specify your G-11 tripod’s tip-to-tip distance with the legs fully retracted or, alternately, the tip-to-tip distance at your preferred viewing height less the 5.25" height of the custom Wheeley Bar.

The ends of your G-11 tripod legs fit into 3.25" diameter steel cups at the ends of the three arms of the Wheeley Bar’s sturdy painted steel tripod base. The cups are slanted at the correct angle to hold your tripod legs at your preferred observing height, so your tip-to-tip measurement should be reasonably accurate. For more details, click on the “tip-to-tip distance" icon above.

Due to the weight of the G-11 mount and the telescope optics typically used with it, extra bracing is added between the three legs of the Wheeley Bar to add strength and rigidity to the assembly. This adds stability to the scope by keeping the legs from twisting if one wheel hangs up temporarily on an uneven surface.

The six large 10" diameter pneumatic wheels on this Wheeley Bar let you maneuver with ease over soft or rough surfaces such as grass, dirt and gravel, as well as on uneven hard surfaces such as flagstone paving. The wheels are set up with two to each Wheeley Bar leg to distribute the weight of the scope evenly over three large tire footprints. This lets you maneuver on very rough terrain without snagging the wheels or sinking into soft ground. A dual inboard wheel design on the rear wheels maintains a narrow profile to make it easy to maneuver through doorways. The pull handle locks the front wheels when not in use. The photo above shows the 5" version of the Losmandy G-11 Wheeley Bar. (It’s shown with both 2-3/8" wheels and 5" wheels, although it comes only with the 5" wheel set.) No photo is yet available of the actual 10" wheel version of this telescope transporter, which comes only with the 10" wheel set. However, the photo in the feature image section below shows a 10" wheel model Wheeley Bar with an optional battery pack and battery pack holder (#BPTRAY) to give you a general idea of the appearance of the10" wheel version of this Wheeley Bar.

A word of warning. Care should be used when moving the complete system, even on smooth surfaces. Be certain the tripod legs are fully and firmly inserted into the Wheeley Bar’s leg receptacles. Move the system using the pull handle. If extra help is needed in soft or particularly rough terrain, the assistant should pull or push the system only by gripping the telescope tripod below the center of gravity, particularly with heavy optics installed on the G-11 mount. Do not push the top of the scope to get it moving, particularly on uneven surfaces. Astronomics and JMI are not responsible for incorrect loading or operation.
