Whether you’re observing a nebula or galaxy light years away, or an owl perched in a tall tree nearby, Meade’s 9 x 63mm Astro roof prism binocular provides a bright image with good resolution to let you see surprising amounts of detail. Its very large 63mm achromatic objective lenses provide almost 60% greater light gathering ability than a 50mm binocular, and 26% better resolution.

Usable eye relief is a good 17mm for eyeglass use. Curvature of field is minimal, and astigmatism is quite low. The result is images that stay usably sharp across most of the field. Overall, this is optically and mechanically a good high power binocular at a very reasonable price. It’s easy on the eyes and easy on the budget.

Features of this binocular . . .

  • Roof prism optics. H-body roof prism design with internal center focus. BaK-4 prisms for high light transmission. Its 10.5" length and 44 ounce weight can become tiring during extended hand-held observing sessions, so a standard 1/4"-20 thread socket for an optional tripod adapter is provided to mount the binocular on a camera tripod for no-hands observing. The socket is located at the front end of the binocular’s center hinge. A thread-in plastic logo plate covers the tripod socket when it’s not in use.
  • Large aperture multicoated optics. Large 63mm objective lenses gather almost 60% more light than a 50mm binocular (and 125% more light than a 42mm) for bright images in twilight or overcast conditions as well as for astronomy. The twilight factor is a whopping 23.81, far above the 17 recommended as a minimum for a low light binocular. Multilayer antireflection coatings provide good light transmission for minimum light loss in dim conditions.
  • Armor. Ribbed black rubber armor absorbs noise and shock and provides a good grip when the binocular is damp from nighttime dew.
  • Roll-down eyecups. The eyecups roll down for eyeglass use, and roll up to shield the eyes from ambient light for improved contrast when not wearing glasses.
  • Good eye relief. Its 17mm of usable eye relief gives only mild vignetting of the field for those who must wear eyeglasses while observing due to severe astigmatism. Those who don’t wear glasses will easily see the entire field with the eyecups rolled up.
  • Fast focusing. Only one turn of the long ribbed focus knob moves from a 16’ close focus out to infinity.
  • Rotary diopter correction. A continuously variable diopter ring on the right eyepiece allows you to match the binocular optics precisely to your individual eyesight for a sharp image.
  • Supplied accessories. The binocular comes in a soft and lightly padded nylon carrying case. Individual eyepiece and objective lens covers are provided. The supplied binocular neck strap is quite narrow and may prove uncomfortable for extended carrying. Adding an optional wide neoprene comfort neck strap (such as our #1277B) will make the binocular less of a burden to carry during long observing sessions.
