| This Meade 35 pound counterweight will help you balance the weight of heavy optical tubes and instrumentation packages on the Meade MAX German equatorial mount. The MAX mount by itself comes with one 35 pound counterweight, allowing you to add only the number of additional counterweights you need for your particular optical system.
As an example, the Meade 16" ACF optical tube (a weight of 140 pounds) requires four 35 pound counterweights to balance on the MAX mount with most expected instrumentation payloads. However, adding a separate photoguide scope requiring rings and an additional dovetail mounting plate, plus a heavy CCD equipment train, etc., may require an additional counterweight or counterweights to balance properly. The Meade 20" ACF OTA (a weight of 190 pounds) requires five 35 pound counterweights.
The MAX mount’s counterweight shaft is a stainless steel threaded rod 1.5" in diameter with six threads per inch. This 35 pound Meade counterweight is equipped with a pushbutton for quick release that lets you slide the counterweight(s) to the approximate correct location on the shaft. Once positioned in the rough location, the pushbutton is released to allow the counterweight(s) to spin up and down on the mount’s threaded counterweight shaft to achieve a fine balance.
