| This new edition of the world-famous Uranometria 2000.0 star atlas is the most comprehensive printed stellar/deep sky atlas and data resource available to the amateur astronomer. Years in development, this massive three-volume achievement affords astronomers, astrophotographers, and CCD imagers the finest roadmap to the heavens yet produced at such a modest price. The star charts are available in two separate volumes – this one, Volume 1, which covers the northern celestial hemisphere from the north celestial pole down to a declination of - 6°, and Volume 2, which covers the southern celestial hemisphere from the south celestial pole up to a declination of + 6°. Both volumes are needed for complete coverage of the sky for observers in the northern hemisphere. A third volume, the Volume 3 Deep Sky Field Guide, presents tabular detailed information about every non-stellar object plotted in the two volumes of star charts, plus information on other galaxies that are too faint to be plotted in the charts, but which may be visible to owners of large telescopes. More than 280,000 stars and over 30,000 deep sky non-stellar objects are located in the Volume 1 and Volume 2 star charts, with a degree of accuracy heretofore unavailable in one resource. Encyclopedic in nature, with maps beautifully redrawn by Wil Tirion and a host of efficient navigation tools, the three volumes have more accurate catalog data for three times the number of deep sky objects shown in the preceding edition of Uranometria. This new edition of Uranometria 2000.0 is clearly an atlas and guide that every serious telescope user, whatever their telescope aperture, will want to own. Features common to the two star chart volumes, including this one . . . - 22 star maps: Volumes 1 and 2 each have a full-sky set of star maps, keyed to the Uranometria 2000.0 charts. The limiting magnitude of these charts is 6.5, essentially making these charts a naked-eye star atlas. The Bayer and Flamsteed numbers and named stars, etc., are labeled. The charts include all Messier objects.
- 8 finder charts: Volumes 1 and 2 each have four large-scale full-page star maps in increments of six hours of right ascension, keyed to the main charts in the volume so you can locate which charts contain which constellations. The declination band tabs match the main chart tabs. The limiting magnitude of these charts is 5.5.
- 220 main star charts: The main star charts are plotted as double-page spreads (at a scale of 1.85 cm per degree of declination). Each double-page black star/white background chart measures 18" wide by 12" high. 220 of these double-page charts cover the entire sky. There are 120 charts in this Northern Hemisphere Volume 1 and 120 in Southern Hemisphere Volume 2. Both volumes include 20 charts that duplicate declination +/- 6°, resulting in 220 unique double-page charts in all. Spread them all out and you’d have a single incredibly detailed chart of the sky with a total area of 330 square feet! The charts include 280,035 accurately plotted stars from the Hipparcos/Tycho catalog, more than 6300 variable stars, and over 30,000 non-stellar deep sky objects. Multiple navigational aids are provided to help you get around the night sky faster and easier. For example, the charts are arranged in order of decreasing right ascension. The chart pages are tabbed by declination band and are keyed to the Finder Charts for quick lookup. The right ascension and declination extent of each chart is displayed in large bold type in the right hand chart legend. If parts of more than one constellation are plotted on the chart, the constellations are listed in order of decreasing area in large bold type in the right hand chart legend. Adjacent chart numbers are displayed around the perimeter of each chart.
- 26 close-up star charts (total both volumes): There charts are keyed to the Uranometria 2000.0 main charts. They are plotted at 2x or 3x the scale of the main charts to show more sky detail in congested areas. Close-up charts are provided for these regions of the sky: North America Nebula/Pelican nebulas; Gamma Cygni region; galaxy clusters Abell 2197/ 2199; Perseus cluster Abell 426; galaxy cluster Abell 779; galaxy cluster Abell 262; galaxy clusters in Andromeda/Pisces; Coma cluster Abell 1656; Hercules galaxy cluster Abell 2151; galaxy clusters in Coma Berenices/Leo; galaxy cluster Abell 1367; M45 (the Pleiades); Virgo/Coma galaxy cluster; M11/Scutum star cloud; Virgo galaxy cluster; galaxy cluster Abell 194; Trifid/Lagoon nebulas; galaxy cluster Abell 3574; Hydra I cluster Abell 1060; M6 (Butterfly cluster)/M7; galaxy clusters in Hydra/Centaurus; Zeta Scorpii region; Centaurus cluster/Abell 3526; Large Magellanic Cloud; Tarantula Nebula; and the Small Magellanic Cloud.
- 280,035 stars are plotted: The two volumes of star charts plot all stars down to a limiting magnitude of 9.75. The close-up maps have a stellar limiting magnitude of 11.0. Positional information comes from the Hipparcos/Tycho catalog. 6,300 variable stars are plotted. Visual magnitudes are plotted in 19 half-magnitude steps, not binned into full magnitude steps as with other star charts.
- Copious indices: There is a separate Star Name Index, Bayer Star Index, and an NGC/IC Object Index keyed to the chart numbers in Volumes 1 and 2. There is a separate Messier Object Index and a Common Name Index keyed to the chart numbers in Volumes 1, 2, and 3.
- 25,895 galaxies are plotted: All NGC galaxies are shown, as well as all others with a magnitude greater than 15.0, or a major axis of 1.5’ or larger. They are drawn to scale as open ovals if their major axis is greater than 5’. Those with a major axis less than 5’ are binned into the following ranges: 5’ to 2’, 2’ to 1’, and less than 1’. All galaxies, except those with equal major and minor axes, are oriented on the chart in the direction of the major axis, as determined by direct inspection of the Digital Sky Survey. The position of each galaxy and other non-stellar object has been verified by direct inspection of the Digital Sky Survey, Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way, or the Atlas of Galactic Nebulae.
- 671 galaxy clusters are plotted: Galaxy clusters are drawn as dashed open circles. Diameters for Abell objects are from Abell’s Revised Catalog. For clusters from the Abell Supplement Catalog, diameters are estimated based upon the distance class.
- 1647 open clusters are plotted: Clusters larger than 5’ are drawn to scale.
- 170 globular clusters are plotted: Globular clusters larger than 5’ are drawn to scale. On the close-up maps, they are to drawn to scale if their diameter is larger than 1.5’.
- 377 bright nebulas are plotted: If they are larger than 10’, they are drawn to scale. If smaller than 10’, they are drawn as solid-line square boxes in two sizes (10’ to 5’ and less than 5’).
- 367 dark nebulas are plotted: If they are larger than 10’, they are drawn to scale with a dashed outline. When smaller than 10’ they are drawn as dashed-line square boxes in two sizes (10’ to 5’ and less than 5’).
- 1144 planetary nebulas are plotted: These objects are plotted as open circles with four protruding lines in 4 size ranges: greater than 30" in size, 30" to 10", 10" to 5’, and less than 5".
