| If you want to mount your Takahashi TSA-102, FS-102, or FSQ-106 refractor on a TeleVue Gibraltar altazimuth mount for casual astronomy, you might have a problem. The spacing between the vertical sides of the Gibraltar mount is too narrow to allow you to use the standard Takahashi clamshell tube ring. The hinges and lock knob of the standard Takahashi ring won’t let you fit the ring into the mount. Takahashi has solved this problem by producing a special adapter that fits the Gibraltar mount. It’s a tube ring, sized to fit the TSA-102, FS-102, and FSQ-106, that bolts together instead of hinging to allow the halves to swing open. Since this felt-lined tube ring has no hinges or clamshell locking knob on its sides, it is narrow enough to fit snugly into the Gibraltar head. There are two bolts in the bottom of the ring that fit into the mounting holes in the Gibraltar mounting yoke. The hex-head bolts that hold the two halves of the tube ring together fit into grooves machined into the sides of the ring (shown in the feature image below).
