This wide field 6 x 20mm polar axis scope for the Vixen Sphinx mount allows you to do the precise alignment on the celestial pole needed for long exposure astrophotography at all latitudes from 70° north down to 70° south. It has a unique bubble level design that does not require the mount to be leveled before you can use the polar finder. The polar axis scope does not come with an illuminator to light up its reticle pattern, but the Sphinx mount already has an illuminator built in as standard equipment. Simply thread in the polar axis scope and you are ready for polar alignment.

A softly glowing etched reticle shows the positions that Polaris (for the northern hemisphere) and guide stars in Octans (for the southern hemisphere) should be in for the scope to be precisely polar aligned. The reticle can be focused to match your eyesight. Set the reticle for the time and date you are observing by rotating the dials shown in the illustration. Look through the finder and move the mount by using its altitude and azimuth fine adjustments until Polaris or the Octans guide stars coincide with their positions marked on the reticle and you’re polar aligned. It’s that simple.

A small alignment scale on the reticle lets you compensate for the movement of Polaris across the sky from 2003 through 2025. This allows a +/-15 arc second accuracy in polar alignment.
