| This SBIG FW8-STL filter wheel for the STL series cameras is a stand-alone filter carousel that holds up to eight 50mm drop-in filters or 48mm threaded filter cells in any combination. It bolts to the front of all SBIG STL-series cameras to replace the standard camera front plate and five-filter capacity internal filter carousel supplied with the camera. This increases the number of filters available for imaging without the need to open the camera body and manually change filters as would be the case with the internal filter wheel. The FW8-STL is supplied without filters.
The front cover of your STL camera is removed and replaced by the FW8-STL. Compared to the existing filter wheel and cover, there is an increase of approximately 0.35" in back focus with the FW8-STL installed. The existing accessory plate connector and bolt pattern on the front cover of the camera are duplicated at the front of the FW8-STL filter wheel so that any existing custom accessories made to fit the camera will also fit the new filter wheel. The FW8-STL is compatible with new large format AO-L adaptive optics accessory for STL cameras.
The FW8-STL is controlled through the I2C port. A short jumper cable to the I2C port is the only external cabling required. All power and commands come from the camera and can be controlled remotely via software without any other external cable running to the computer or power supply. The FW8-STL has its own ROM and electronics so your camera does not have to be returned to SBIG for re-programming to control the new filter wheel. The camera drivers are simply updated by free download from the SBIG web site.
The FW8-STL is available here for separate purchase for installation by you in the field. It can also be ordered as a factory replacement for the internal filter carousel at a special package price when you order a new STL camera (#FW8PACK).
