The 8 x 42mm Bushnell Discoverer is an excellent low light, wide field binocular with special rain-shedding Rainguard optical coatings for all-weather use at a reasonable price. It has fully-multicoated PC3 phase-corrected optics for images that are surprisingly bright. XTR 60-layer dielectric coatings on the roof prisms provide the highest light transmission in its class. The Discoverer has a field that’s quite wide and flat, with little astigmatism and distortion. Resolution and color fidelity are excellent in all lighting conditions.

The Discoverer is a surprisingly capable performer across a wide range of observing conditions, near and far, in bright sunlight and dim twilight alike. This is an optically and mechanically excellent binocular at a price only a fraction of similar-quality European optics. The Discoverer is a hard binocular to beat in its price range – or any price range.

Features of this binocular . . .

  • Roof prism optics. H-body roof prism design with internal center focus and a very wide 8° field of view. BaK-4 prisms for high light transmission. Its 5.4" length is easy to handle, and its 28 ounce weight won’t weigh you down during all-day birding.
  • Large aperture fully multicoated optics. Large 42mm objective lenses gather substantial amounts of light for bright high power images in twilight or overcast conditions. The optics are fully multicoated on all air-to-glass surfaces with high transmission antireflection materials for bright, high contrast, natural color images.
  • XTR prism coatings. Its high-transmission BaK-4 roof prisms use premium 60-layer XTR dielectric reflective coatings, the same as in the top-of-the-line $1000 Elite binoculars, for exceptionally high reflectivity and optimum color fidelity across the entire visible spectrum.
  • Phase-coated prisms. The state-of-the-art PC3 phase coatings on the BaK-4 roof prisms – also the same as those used on the top-of-the-line Elite binoculars – eliminate the natural phase shift in the light path that’s inherent in all roof prism binoculars and normally muddies small details. These coatings give you visibly sharper images and a more accurate color rendition. This is especially noticeable when viewing fine detail or when looking into the rising or setting sun at a silhouetted or backlit bird, where more color and detail is clearly visible in the shadowed areas of the bird.
  • Waterproof and fogproof. O-ring sealed and nitrogen-purged to be totally waterproof, fogproof, and dustproof in all climate extremes. It will give you peak performance no matter where you are birding – a high humidity/high temperature Costa Rican rain forest, a cold salt spray-soaked New England shoreline, a high alpine meadow in Colorado, or your own back yard.
  • Rainguard coatings. All external optical surfaces (objective lenses and eyepieces) are treated with permanent “Rainguard" coatings. These special hydrophobic (water-repelling) coatings cause the condensation from rain, fog, snow, or your own breath to form in much smaller droplets than on standard optical coatings. Smaller droplets scatter less light, resulting in higher light transmission and a clearer image, even in a driving rain.
  • Armor. Clad in black armor to take every kind of rough treatment in stride. The armor also insulates the binocular to keep it comfortable to the touch in all temperatures, and is lightly textured to provide a sure grip in wet weather. Molded-in thumb grooves under the barrels keep the hands positioned for proper balance.
  • Twist-up eyecups. A quick quarter-turn counter clockwise twist extends the eyecups for non-eyeglass use. A clockwise twist on the rubber-rimmed eyecups retracts them into the binocular body for eyeglass or sunglass use.
  • Long eye relief. Eye relief is specified at a long 18mm. While this is technically correct, the actual usable eye relief typically measures a mm or two less due to the recessing of the eyepieces when the eyecups are in the down position for eyeglass use. A shorter eye relief than specified is typical of all binoculars, although this Bushnell is much closer to being accurate in its specification than most manufacturers. Some vignetting of the image will be visible for most eyeglass wearers.
  • Close focusing. Focusing is reasonably fast at one and a quarter turns from the 10’ close focus out to the horizon. The close focus is specified at 10’, we typically can focus closer than that.
  • Rotary diopter correction. A small 23 click-stop diopter adjustment lever is located at the front of the large ribbed focusing knob to allow you to match the binocular optics very precisely to your individual eyesight for the sharpest images.
  • Supplied accessories. The binocular comes with a wide cloth-wrapped neoprene neck strap that makes the lightweight binocular easy to carry during all-day birding sessions. An eyepiece rainguard, objective lens covers, and soft vinyl case complete the supplied accessories.
