| It’s hard to believe how many of the features of this Bushnell Legend 10 x 42mm Ultra HD high power binocular could only be found on ultra-premium binoculars only a few short years ago. ED glass optics, phase correcting prism coatings, lens coatings that shed water and improve low light performance, and much more . . . all started out costing an arm and a leg, but are now affordable for virtually everyone . This is indeed a golden age for birding optics, and the Bushnell Legend Ultra HD is one of the modestly-priced high power treasures of our times.
This Bushnell 10x42 Legend Ultra HD is a remarkable high power performer, both optically and mechanically. Its high definition images are surprisingly bright for a 10x binocular, with vivid and fully saturated colors. Astigmatism is low. A slight trace of red fringing shows at the edges of the field when looking at very contrasty subject (a branch or power line silhouetted against a bright sky), but it is mild and becomes invisible in the central 80-85% of the field or when looking at normal contrast subjects. There is a small amount of field curvature (visible as a slight softening of the image at the edges of the field), but this is not visible in the central two-thirds of the field where most observing is done and your eyes are at their sharpest.
Features of this binocular . . . Roof prism design. H-body roof prism with internal center focus puts large aperture optics in a compact package.
ED glass optics. Objective lenses of ED Prime (Extra-low Dispersion glass) virtually eliminate chromatic aberration and color fringing for high definition color fidelity and contrast that makes it easier to resolve subtle species differences at a distance, even in poor light.
Fully multicoated optics. Multilayer Ultra Wide Band antireflection coatings are applied to all air-to-glass surfaces in the optical system. These coatings (individually customized for each element in the optical path), provide particularly high light transmission in the portion of the visible spectrum most prominent in low light/twilight conditions. This makes it easier to spot that last reclusive bird as darkness starts to fall. Overall light throughput (the amount of light collected by the binocular that actually reaches your eye) is as high as 90% across much of the spectrum, the highest in its class.
Phase-coated prisms. PC-3 phase-correcting coatings on the premium BaK-4 prisms provide more visible color and detail in the shadowed areas of a backlit or silhouetted bird when observing into the rising or setting sun or when observing in shadowed woodlands.
Waterproof and fogproof. Dry nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and fogproof in all temperature and climate extremes. Designed to operate reliably in rainforests and deserts alike.
Rainguard HD lens coatings. The external surfaces of the eyepieces and objective lenses are treated with permanent “Rainguard HD" coatings. These special hydrophobic (water-repelling) coatings cause rain, fog, snow, or the condensation from your breath to form much smaller droplets on the lenses than they do on standard optical coatings, This results in higher light transmission and a clearer image in poor weather.
Armor. Ribbed black rubber armor on the lightweight magnesium chassis absorbs noise and shock. Soft touch areas in the underside of the binocular body compress to form thumb grooves to keep your hands positioned perfectly for proper balance.
Twist-up eyecups. Twist-up eyecups with soft rubber rims block ambient light to improve contrast for those who don’t wear glasses while observing. The eyecups twist back down into the body to provide extra eye relief for those who must wear glasses while birding. An intermediate soft click-stop halfway between lowered and fully extended gives you a choice of three eyecup heights.
Wide field. The field of view is a good 6.5° (340’ at 1000 yards). It works well for long distance scanning of open fields, marshes, and off-shore rookeries. It is a little tight (but still quite usable) for close-in woodland birding, with a field 1.7’ wide at a 15’ distance.
Very close focusing. Less than one and a quarter turns of the comfortably-large ribbed focus knob moves from a very good 6.5’ close focus (although we typically can focus even closer) out to the horizon.
Good eye relief. Eye relief is specified at 15mm, although the usable eye relief will probably measure a few mm less due to the eye lenses being recessed to keep them from being scratched during use. There may be some vignetting for those who must wear eyeglasses or sunglasses while birding.
Locking diopter correction. A continuously variable diopter ring on the right eyepiece allows you to match the binocular optics precisely to your individual eyesight for the sharpest images. Pull the ring up to adjust the diopter; then snap it back down to lock the correction in place. This prevents the diopter control from accidentally moving out of adjustment when you least expect it, as is often the case with lesser binoculars.
Wide neck strap. The standard equipment wide padded cloth neck strap makes the binocular a comfortable and easy carry during all-day birding sessions.
Binocular harness. In addition to the neck strap, this Bushnell 10 x 42mm Legend Ultra HD also comes with a binocular harness for no-hands carrying. It’s not a $25 option as it is with other binocular brands. Elastic straps hold the Legend close to your body without swinging from side to side or bouncing on your chest as you walk. Sliding connectors make it easy to raise the Legend to your eyes when a possible life bird flies into view. The harness has a ventilated mesh back to keep you cool and comfortable in the field.
Rigid case. A zippered molded case with carrying strap is provided for safe storage and protection of your optics while traveling. The case has a mesh inner compartment to store the binocular harness when not in use.
Tripod adaptable. A tripod adapter socket is concealed under the Bushnell logo in the center hinge. This lets you mount your Legend Ultra HD on any convenient camera or video tripod, using an optional tripod adapter, for extended viewing sessions from a fixed location.
Other supplied accessories. An eyepiece rainguard is standard equipment, as are tethered (but easily removable) objective lens covers. A washable microfiber lens cleaning cloth is also standard, plus a soft drawstring pouch storage bag for the binocular.
Limited lifetime warranty. The materials and workmanship of this Bushnell Legend Ultra HD binocular are warranted to be free of defects for the life of the binocular. The warranty is available to any owner of the Bushnell 10 x 42mm Legend Ultra HD Binocular.
