The Bushnell 8 x 42mm Excursion puts a surprising amount of features and performance into a not very expensive package. It has fully multicoated optics, with premium PC3 phase coatings that were originally created for the top-of-the-line Bausch & Lomb Elite binoculars. The images are bright and sharp, with excellent resolution and color fidelity. The 8x42 Excursion field is respectably flat, with minimal chromatic aberration and relatively minor astigmatism. Its view is easy on the eyes during extended observing sessions. Close focus is a mere 7’, making it a smart choice for butterflies, as well as close-in warbler, woodland, and backyard birding.

The high resolution and brightness of its 42mm objective lenses make it equally at home examining the details and colors of distant birds in open field, lake, and shore-side birding. It is a surprising performer across a wide range of observing conditions, bright sunlight and dim twilight alike. This is an optically and mechanically very good binocular. Its performance would have set you back six or seven times its modest price only a few short years ago.

Features of this binocular . . .

  • Roof prism optics. H-body roof prism design with internal center focus. BaK-4 prisms for high light transmission. Its 5.6" length is easy to handle, and its light 26 ounce weight won’t weigh you down during all-day birding. A standard ¼"-20 thread tripod adapter socket is built into the body’s front hinge.
  • Large aperture fully multicoated optics. Large 42mm objective lenses gather substantial amounts of light for bright images in twilight or overcast conditions. The twilight factor is 18.33, well above the 17 recommended as a minimum for a low light binocular. The optics are fully multicoated on all air-to-glass surfaces with high transmission antireflection materials for bright, high contrast, natural color response images.
  • Phase-coated prisms. The state-of-the-art PC3 phase coatings on the BaK-4 roof prisms were originally designed for the ultra-premium Bausch & Lomb Elite binoculars. The PC3 coatings eliminate the natural phase shift inherent in a roof prism binocular that muddies small details. These coatings give you visibly sharper images and a more accurate color rendition. This is especially noticeable when viewing fine detail or when looking into the rising or setting sun at a silhouetted or backlit bird, where more color is visible in the shadowed areas of the bird.
  • Waterproof and fogproof. Dry nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and fogproof in all temperature and climate extremes. Designed to operate reliably in rainforests and deserts alike.
  • Armor. Black rubber armor absorbs noise and shock. Ribbed gripping surfaces provide a solid hold when wet.
  • Twist-up eyecups. A quick quarter-turn counter clockwise twist extends the eyecups for non-eyeglass use. A clockwise twist on the rubber-rimmed eyecups retracts them into the binocular body for eyeglass or sunglass use.
  • Long eye relief. Eye relief is specified at 18mm. While this is technically correct, the actual usable eye relief typically measures a mm or two less due to the recessing of the eyepieces when the eyecups are in the down position for eyeglass use. A shorter eye relief than specified is typical of all binoculars. There will be some minor vignetting of the field for eyeglass wearers, but these binoculars are very eyeglass-friendly.
  • Close focusing. One and three-quarter turns of the comfortably-large ribbed focus knob moves smoothly from a 7’ close focus out to the horizon.
  • Rotary diopter correction. A continuously-variable diopter ring on the right eyecup allows you to match the binocular optics very precisely to your individual eyesight for the sharpest images.
  • Supplied accessories. The comfortably wide cloth-covered neoprene neck strap makes the lightweight binocular easy to carry during all-day birding sessions. The neck strap has special clips for quick disconnect from the binocular body. A second set of disconnects are supplied for use with an optional binocular harness to make changing from harness to neck strap fast and easy. The supplied lightweight molded case has a number of unique and useful features. The case has smoothly rounded edges that won’t dig into your body while carrying it. Its interior is divided into two compartments (one for the binocular and the other for a field guide, optics cleaning supplies, or an emergency peanut butter and jelly sandwich). There’s a zippered pocket in the divider that can hold your credit cards or driver’s license. An additional mesh pocket on the side of the divider can hold your car keys. There’s a separate removable woven strap for the carrying case. The tethered objective lens covers flip down out of the way when not protecting the optics. If desired, you can remove the lens covers completely. An eyepiece rainguard completes the supplied accessories.
