The adapter has a platform to which the spotting scope is bolted using the scope’s standard 1/4"-20 thread tripod mounting hole. The platform/scope combination in turn mounts on your camera tripod. Your camera is attached to a head and arm assembly that holds your camera’s lens up to the spotting scope eyepiece. Images are shot through the scope’s eyepiece using a technique called afocal photography. The camera’s autofocusing mechanism focuses the camera sharply on the high power image you’ve already composed and prefocused in the scope by eye. You can also zoom in and out on the eyepiece image using your camera’s zoom controls for a closer or wider angle view.

The camera platform is hinged to either aim the camera forward for use with a straight-through viewing scope or tilt down for use with a 45° viewing angle scope. The camera platform has micrometer adjustment knobs to adjust it up or down and right or left, while the spotting scope platform is mounted on a track that allows it to be moved fore and aft in relation to the camera position. All of these adjustments allow you to center your camera lens precisely on the optical axis of the scope eyepiece and lock it in place. This assures that your eyepiece image fully covers the camera’s imaging chip with no vignetting. Because of the adjustment ranges of the camera platform and separate scope platform, this adapter will work with most non-Nikon scopes, as well as all Nikon field scopes and spotting scopes.
