| This is a medium power wide field eyepiece for digiscoping (and incidental visual observing) with current Nikon 50mm, 60mm, and 82mm Fieldscopes. The eyepiece has a specially grooved top that is exposed when the flat rubber eyecup for visual observing is removed from the eyepiece. This groove interlocks with a Nikon digiscoping adapter (Field Scope Bracket) for afocal (through both the camera lens and the eyepiece) nature photography with a Nikon Coolpix digital camera and a Nikon Fieldscope.
For Nikon Coolpix cameras 7900, 5200, and 4200 only, this eyepiece should be used with Nikon Field Scope Bracket FSB-1A (our part #6957).
For Nikon Coolpix cameras 5600 and 4600 only, this eyepiece should be used with Nikon Field Scope Bracket FSB-2 (our part #6956).
For Nikon Coolpix cameras P1 and P2 only, this eyepiece should be used with Nikon Field Scope Bracket FSB-3 (our part #6957).
The visual field of view with each Fieldscope is not specified in the Nikon literature. However, it appears on examination to be similar to the field of the standard Nikon N24WN Fieldscope eyepiece. Eye relief is likewise not specified, as the eyepiece is designed primarily for digiscoping, with visual observing being only a secondary use. However, it likewise appears to be similar to that of the standard N24WN eyepiece. Visual magnifications are as follows: 16x with a 50mm Fieldscope; 24x with a 60mm Fieldscope; and 30x with an 82mm Fieldscope. Photographic magnifications and fields of view will vary, depending on the camera used and the zoom setting of the camera lens. Because of the modifications to the N24WN eyepiece body needed to convert it to this N24WDE for digiscoping use, a twist-up eyecup for visual observing without eyeglasses could not be incorporated into this eyepiece. Accordingly, only a flat rubber eyecup is provided to slip over the grooved top of the eyepiece to keep eyeglasses from being scratched accidentally when the eyepiece is used visually. Observers who do not need eyeglasses when observing may find it a little more difficult to properly position their eye at the proper distance behind the eyepiece without a twist-up eyecup to guide them. In addition, contrast will be somewhat reduced due to the lack of an eyecup to block ambient light for the non-eyeglass observer. The optics are fully multicoated, using Nikon’s proprietary antireflection coatings, for high light transmission and contrast. The eyepiece threads into place. To prevent accidental loss in the field, a rubber O-ring at the base of the eyepiece threads compresses as the eyepiece is screwed into the scope body. This locks the eyepiece in place to keep it from vibrating loose during transport and use. Slip-on dust covers are provided for both ends of the eyepiece, rubber for the observer side of the eyepiece and plastic for the scope side.
