| The new waterproof and fogproof Nikon XL II zoom is fully sealed to withstand the most unpleasant weather that Mother Nature can serve up. The aluminum body is sheathed in black rubber armor that not only protects the optics, but also makes the scope more comfortable to hold after it has been sitting in hot sunlight or cold rain for a few hours. The objective lens cover is tethered permanently to the scope body so it can’t be lost. A loop on the cover slips over a rubber retaining hook molded into the underside of the body to prevent the cover from flapping about when in use. A slip-on protective eyepiece cover is standard equipment. The XL II’s soft case has a belt loop for no-hands carrying, as well as a convenient detachable shoulder strap. The XL II can be mounted on a tripod with the case on the scope, and the case folded down so you can use the scope without having to remove the case. The built-in zoom eyepiece has an exceptionally flat field, sharply focused from edge to edge at all powers. Eye relief is 14mm at 16x, allowing nearly unrestricted viewing by eyeglass wearers. A soft rubber eyepiece rim protects glasses from scratches while observing. The focus moves from the horizon down to 33’ in two-thirds of a turn of the knurled focus ring, while little more than a quarter-turn of the separate power ring zooms from a 16x wide angle (103’ field at 1000 yards) to a detailed 48x close-up (with a still-wide 56’ field). Fully multicoated roof prism optics give you bright images in daytime and twilight alike. In addition, the XL II uses phase-correcting coatings on its roof prisms. These coatings, identical to those in premium binoculars, give higher contrast and resolution in shadowed areas when looking towards the rising or setting sun. Strictly a visual scope (the XL II is not adaptable to photography), this waterproof and fogproof Nikon is a smart choice for use when canoeing, backpacking, shore birding – wherever and whenever bad weather, rough treatment, and occasional soakings are expected. The performance specifications at the left are at a magnification of 16x. At a magnification of 30x, the Nikon XL II zoom provides a 77’ field of view at 1000 yards, a usable eye relief of 9mm, a 2mm exit pupil, and a twilight factor of 42. At a magnification of 48x, the Nikon XL II zoom provides a 56’ field of view at 1000 yards, a usable eye relief of 9mm, a 1.28mm exit pupil, and a twilight factor of 53.
