| This Pentax XP waterproof 10 x 33 roof prism binocular puts excellent high power optics into a very compact body. It weighs only 17 ounces, so it’s easy to carry for all-day birding. While a 10x binocular might be considered primarily a long distance observing tool, the excellent close focus of the Pentax XP makes it a sound choice for more intimate observing, as well. Pentax claims a close focus of 4.9’, but we invariably measure the focus of the Pentax XP at being closer to 3’, making it a good choice for butterflies, as well as close-in warbler, woodland, and backyard feeder birding. Even at the longer specified 4.9’ close focus, its 10x magnification effectively puts your eye within 6" of the bird or butterfly. The brightness of the Pentax 33mm objective lenses is surprising. They are brighter than some competitively-priced 10 x 42mm binoculars we’ve compared them with, proving the superior light transmission of the Pentax optical coatings. Curvature of field is virtually nonexistent, as are astigmatism and barrel distortion. The result is images that stay usably sharp across virtually the entire field. The sharp images combine with excellent color rendition and minimal chromatic aberration for a view that is a pleasure to look at during extended observing sessions. Overall, this Pentax XP is an optically and mechanically excellent binocular at a very reasonable price. It is great to look through, light enough, and small enough so even a birder with very small hands will find it easy to hold and use for long periods. Features of this binocular . . . Roof prism optics. H-body roof prism design with internal center focus. BaK-4 prisms for high light transmission. Its 4.8" length is easy to handle, and its light 17 ounce weight won’t weigh you down during all-day carrying. Fully multicoated optics. The Pentax multilayer antireflection coatings have visibly higher light transmission than many competitive larger-aperture binoculars for minimum light loss in dim conditions. Phase-coated prisms. Special phase-correcting coatings are applied to the roof prisms for peak contrast, color fidelity, and resolution. The resulting improvement is easily visible as additional color and detail seen in the shadowed areas of a silhouetted or backlit bird. Waterproof and fogproof. Nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be fogproof and waterproof to a depth of one meter in all temperature and climate extremes. Designed to operate reliably in rainforest, desert, or arctic island. Armor. Black rubber armor on the lightweight fiber-reinforced polycarbonate body absorbs noise and shock and provides a good grip when wet. Twist-up eyecups. An eighth of a turn of the rubber-rimmed eyecups retracts them into the binocular body for eyeglass or sunglass use. An eighth turn in the opposite direction extends the eyecups for non-eyeglass use. Four clickstop eyecup height settings let you adjust the eye relief to your personal preferences. Good eye relief. Eye relief is specified at a long 18mm. While this is technically correct, the actual usable eye relief measures closer to 12mm due to the recessed location of the eyepieces in the binocular body to protect them from unwanted scratches. A shorter eye relief than specified is typical of all binoculars. There will be some minor vignetting of the field for eyeglass wearers. Very close focusing. Only one and a third turns of the comfortably-large ribbed focus knob moves from the closest focus out to the horizon. Pentax specifies 4.9’ as the close focus, but we invariably measure it at about 3’ in our tests. Not everyone may be able to achieve this close a focus however, so we’ll stick to quoting Pentax’s more conservative 4.9’ close focus in our specifications. Rotary diopter correction. A continuously variable diopter ring with 31 discrete clickstops on the right eyepiece allows you to match the binocular optics very precisely to your individual eyesight for a sharp image. Supplied accessories. The comfortable 1" wide woven neck strap makes the lightweight binocular even less of a burden to carry during all-day birding sessions. Press-fit rubber objective lens covers are tethered to the center hinge of the binocular. They can be removed if desired by simply unscrewing the Pentax logo in the center hinge. A standard 1/4"-20 thread socket for attaching an optional tripod adapter is located under the thread-in plastic logo. An eyepiece rainguard is standard. The supplied soft case is made of padded water-shedding Cordura-type nylon.
