The Pentax PF-63 Zoom is a lightweight and compact armored straight-through viewing 63mm spotting scope. Its rugged rubber-armored fiber-reinforced polycarbonate body is O-ring sealed and nitrogen-filled to be internally fogproof and waterproof to a depth of one meter.

The extra 3mm diameter of the scope’s 63mm objective lens yields 5% higher resolution and 10% greater light gathering than a conventional 60mm scope. Its sophisticated optical system uses a costly BaK-4 image-erecting prism for high light transmission, plus a 4-element 3-group objective lens and a non-removable 4-element 3-group zoom eyepiece for high resolution. All lens elements are fully multicoated for high light transmission and contrast.

Features that distinguish this scope from competitive scopes . . .

  • Exceptionally fast focusing. Only half a turn of the large ribbed rubber focusing knob located at the side of the scope moves from a close focus of 40 feet out to beyond the horizon and beyond. Despite its speed, the focusing is very precise, making it easy to follow birds in flight and other moving subjects. The large focusing knob is easy to use in cold or wet weather, even when wearing gloves.
  • The PF-63 Zoom is supplied with a non-removable 20x to 50x zoom eyepiece. This provides a view that ranges from a 1.6° field at 20x (84’ @ 1000 yards) to a 0.9° field (48’ @1000 yards) at 50x. The eyepiece, like the scope body, is specially sealed to be weatherproof under the worst observing conditions a birder might encounter.
Rotating the power ring on the eyepiece changes the magnification from a low power/wide angle 20x, for glassing large areas, to a higher power 50x for observing details close up. Unlike many scopes, the Pentax zoom remains in focus as the magnification changes, limiting the amount of refocusing needed as you move from one end of the power range to the other.
While specified at a very long 22mm to 17mm eye relief, the measured usable eye relief actually ranges from 15mm at 20x to 10mm at 50x. These values will somewhat vignette the field of view for those who must wear eyeglasses while observing due to astigmatism, particularly at the higher powers. Those who do not wear glasses will find the eye relief more than acceptable for unvignetted viewing, particularly when the roll-down rubber eyecup is extended to block out ambient light and position the eye at the correct eyepoint.
As with any zoom eyepiece, the precise focal length or magnification of the Pentax zoom at any given point in time is not all that important. The experienced observer invariably adjusts the zoom magnification to match the seeing conditions and object size as he looks through the eyepiece, rather than first setting the zoom to an arbitrary focal length value according to the magnification scale on the side of the eyepiece and using it at that power no matter what the seeing conditions. The flexibility of a zoom to instantly match the magnification to changing lighting or seeing conditions is one of the zoom eyepiece’s chief advantages.
  • Other features of this scope . . .
  • All lens elements in both the objective lens and eyepiece are fully multicoated to maximize light transmission, clarity, and contrast.
  • The rugged and lightweight (less than two pound) fiber-reinforced polycarbonate body is nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be internally fogproof in all temperature extremes and waterproof to a depth of one meter. Nitrogen purging also prevents the internal formation of fungus in high humidity climates, such as rain forests.
  • Black rubber armor on the scope body provides shock-protection and a sure grip in wet weather.
  • Slip-on dust caps are provided for the eyepiece and the objective lens to protect the optics while they are being transported or stored.
  • The 63mm Pentax mounts on any photo tripod having a standard 1/4"-20 thread mounting bolt.
  • A sight line molded into the top of the prism housing aids in acquiring targets quickly. The straight-through viewing design of this scope lets you quickly locate birds in the field. You can switch from roughly locating birds using the sight line to observing them close up through the eyepiece with little more than a 1" move of your head.
  • The supplied nylon soft carrying case is lightly padded and has a zippered opening. Carrying handles are provided on the case, which is designed only for transport and storage and must be removed before using the scope.
  • This Pentax spotting scope is protected by the Pentax “Worry-Free" lifetime warranty that will repair or replace (at Pentax’s option) any defective product (even if damaged by you) for the life of the original owner for a cost of only $19.95 to cover shipping and handling.
