| The rigid foam in this hard case is designed to hold and transport a Celestron NexStar 8, NexStar 8i, or NexStar 8i Special Edition single fork arm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. For the benefit of the Star Trek fans among us, the case is shaped somewhat like a photon torpedo, with a thicker center section to hold the optical tube and thinner sides that cradle the fork arms. This form-fitting cross-section allows it to take up less space during transport than an ordinary footlocker-style case, and provides firmer support to the scope in all directions. The approximate weight of the empty case is 22 lbs. The shipping weight is approximately 26 pounds. Its outside dimensions are 13.75" x 21.6" x 31.75", including handles. However, due to its physical size, the freight companies consider it to be an oversize carton and charge for shipping as if it actually weighed 30 lbs. The foam of the case is precut to hold computer hand control, five eyepieces, AC or DC power supply, and other miscellaneous accessories, as well as the scope. The Star Pointer finderscope needs to be removed from the NexStar and slipped into a compartment cut into the case foam before the scope can be put in the case. The case has locking latches, three steel-reinforced carrying handles, and a pair of wheels that make it easy to roll the case from place to place. An optional large wheel upgrade is available for transporting the scope over rough terrain. It is not inexpensive, but it offers solid protection for your NexStar scope. The peace of mind of knowing your scope is traveling safely is surely worth the expense.
