Product Description

A high-precision eyepiece for a wide range of astronomical measurements, the Meade MA12mm Astrometric Eyepiece is an important tool for the advanced amateur. The laser-etched reticle (below) is evenly illuminated by an internal red LED, with illumination intensity variable from bright to faint. Four types of measuring scales are included, for measuring double star angular separations, position angles, planetary diameters, and lunar crater diameters, as well as many other useful astronomical measurements. Included also is a doublecrossline scale for long-exposure photo-guiding, making the Meade Astrometric Eyepiece truly an all-purpose illuminated reticle system. The 3-element Modified Achromatic optical system yields sharp images across the full field of view; optics are coated for increased light transmission. The eyepiece's diopter adjustment allows for sharp focusing of the reticle to the observer's eye, and a rubber eyecup (foldable for eyeglass wearers) shields the eye from extraneous light. The MA12mm Astrometric Eyepiece is supplied complete with wireless illumination control and internal batteries.

I picked this up to use with splitting doubles. I have not used it much yet. You have to go through a calibration process so that you understand the scales with your scope.

The scales are fairly easy to read. The illumination seems a bit brighter than I would like even at its lowest setting, but it is still useable. (Posted on 11/1/2019)

I purchased this eyepiece for the primary purpose of measuring double star separations and position angles, and for the secondary purpose of facilitating accurate alignments.

Like all such eyepiece, the abovemost part of the eyepiece (see knurled black rubberized piece in photo above) rotates to allow a focus on the reticle, while the 'scopes focuser works in the usual way.

Upon receipt, what I found was
* The eyepiece has severe optical distortions: there is a small central "donut hole" (less than 1/5 the fov by diameter) where the reticle focuser can achieve focus, leaving a wider donut (~3/5 of the fov) where the reticle is very suddenly out of focus and distorted. The distortion is somewhat reduced, at the very edge of the fov (well beyond the reach of the reticle markings).
* The eyepiece has exceptionally short - almost eyeball to glass - eye relief. You will not be able to obtain focus in most telescopes with most 2" to 1 1/4" adaptors.
* The illuminator, even at its lowest setting, is so bright that it destroys night vision. On even the brightest of doubles you can't see the double with the illuminator on.

Another review rated this eyepiece highly. My best advice to you, who may be trying to reconcile these two reviews, is to find someone who has the 12 MA astrometric, or has used one - not heard about it, but actually has and/or has used one - and get their honest comments (or see for yourself). I didn't do this until after I had the unit in hand, which was my mistake. Of the several people who I was able to find who had personal experience with this eyepiece, none had good things to say about. (Posted on 8/1/2019)

This eyepiece makes it easy for precision alignment of your scope during setup.
It also helps to get a good main scope alignment to a RACI spotter scope.
The illuminated recticle makes it easy to get your stars precisely centered for any type of alignment operation. In addition, the graduated scales make it simple to perform a number of precision measurements. (Posted on 10/6/2018)
