Product Description

This new 68° 24mm Explore Scientific is an excellent low to medium power wide field eyepiece with an unusual benefit. It is O-ring sealed and argon-purged to be 100% waterproof. This prevents internal fogging in the eyepiece; keeps the interior dust-and fungus-free; and makes it easier to clean, as there is no risk of excess cleaning solution getting trapped between the lenses.

Many observers feel that a 68° field eyepiece like this Explore Scientific hits the "sweet spot" between the affordable, but "looking down a tube" view of conventional 45°-50° field eyepieces, and the full-immersion, but very expensive, observing experience of an ultra-wide field 82° or 100° eyepiece.

While the 24mm Explore Scientific is particularly well-suited to observing with Dobsonian reflectors and fast focal ratio refractors (it provides a big 5.3mm exit pupil for rich field observing on an f/4.5 Dobsonian, for example), it provides "picture window onto space" images with any telescope type and is a superb eyepiece to replace the so-so 25mm or 26mm that is usually supplied as standard equipment with many new scopes.

You can use the calculator in the "formula" tab above to see just how wide the field will be with your particular telescope. For example, it will give you a 1.43° field at 48x with a 10" f/4.5 Dobsonian, more than enough to take in all of the Pleiades at one time. This gives you over five and a half minutes of uninterrupted observing with such a scope while an object drifts from one side of the eyepiece's flat field to the other. That's plenty of time for multiple observers to look at the same object, or for you to absorb as much detail as possible, before having to reposition the scope.

The eye relief of this six lens/fully multicoated optical system is 18mm, foe essentially unvignetted views for those with severe astigmatism who must wear eyeglasses while observing. The eyepiece has a soft fold-down rubber eyecup and comes with dust covers for both ends of the eyepiece.

This is an excellent eyepiece for observing galaxy clusters, framing emission nebulas with the black of space, observing the nebulosity around the Pleiades, etc. The 24mm Explore Scientific waterproof would be a welcome addition to any serious deep space observer's eyepiece collection.

This individually serial numbered Explore Scientific eyepiece is backed by a limited one year warranty, which will be extended to an Explore Scientific transferable lifetime limited warranty when its warranty card is registered with Explore Scientific within 60 days of purchase. The ES 24mm 68 is a wonderful eyepiece in my f8 reflector, it provides wide crisp views of anything you can view through it. This eyepiece is considered by many to be the best of the 68 degree line, with the best value at this price point. (Posted on 10/17/2019)

One of my favorite eyepieces. Highly recommended. Nice views in every telescope I have tried. (Posted on 10/17/2019)

really nice longer focal length eyepiece that maximizes the field of view in the 1.25" barrel. sharp wide views and a fairly heavy package for a 1.25".

eye relief is usable with glasses but it is tight to see the whole field. (Posted on 10/4/2019)

ES hits another home run. I especially like that it is waterproof. (Posted on 9/16/2019)

This has become my favorite eyepiece in a short time. I use it in both my AT102ED and 8" dob. It gives nice well corrected, sharp stars out to the edge. The contrast is nice and the eye relief is comfortable for me. It's wide enough to use as a finder eyepiece as well. It gives me just enough magnification to spot some faint dso while star hopping. It's a perfect match for the AT102ED. Scanning though the Milky Way and viewing larger open cluster is stunning with this combo. This is one eyepiece I wont let go of. (Posted on 9/6/2019)

To compliment my ES82 11mm & 4.7mm eyepieces, I purchased this a number of years ago at the recommendation of the excellent community at cloudynights.com. It is an excellent eyepiece for my ST-80, providing me nearly 4 degrees true field of view at 17x. This is a premium eyepiece at an economical price point. (Posted on 11/26/2018)

I use this eyepiece in my 8” SCT f10 and 4” MAK and am very satisfied with the sharp wide views it provides. I learned through Cloudy Nights that this eyepiece would give me the widest Field of View in the 1.25 inch format and this replaced both my 32mm and 40mm Plossl's. This is the first eyepiece I grab and is now my favorite eyepiece near this focal range. I use eyeglasses and have no issues with the 18mm eye relief. (Posted on 11/16/2018)

I have owed the ES24mm 68 degree for about a year now. I use it in both my 8" Dobsonian and 4" Refractor. What a great eyepiece. Very comfortable with pin point stars. (Posted on 11/7/2018)

Among the very best low magnification wide field 1.25" format eyepieces. My testing shows me that it surpasses my TeleVue 24 mm Panoptic, and that is saying a lot. No astigmatism noted, or if there it is very mild. Stars are virtually pinpoint to the field edge. I am very happy with the overall view. Eye relief was good without my glasses. Great eyepiece for me as I do not wear glasses to observe. Immersive view, probably the best 1.25" low power eyepiece that money can buy. (Posted on 11/1/2018)

I believe the best thing I can say about this eyepiece is that it works so well in so many of my telescopes. My 120mm f/5 achromatic refractor is a tough test for any eyepiece, and this eyepiece provides an excellent level of correction for a 6-element design in its price point, and provides a stunning richest field of view. The ES68 24mm is also my goto finder and wide field of view eyepiece for my 80mm f/15 refractor. (Posted on 10/31/2018)

Originally bought for a scope with a 1.25" focuser, this eyepiece continues to get significant focuser time even though all my scopes now have 2" capability. It is simply a fine eyepiece and also happens to carry a friendly price.

Without glasses this is a joy to use. Wide, sharp, cool tone and quite comfortable. But the effective ER is not quite enough for glasses because of the dreaded recessed lens. A better design around the eye lens and this ocular would be perfect. (Posted on 10/26/2018)
Review by:
This eyepiece provides the widest field of view possible with 1.25" eyepieces, and does so with a very comfortable eye placement, no kidney beaning, and a relatively compact size and weight. In some short focal length scopes I do notice some field curvature, but its not intrusive and stars are sharp to the edge. (Posted on 10/24/2018)

I once doubted the "Hype" behind the ES 24mm 68*, but after I tried this EP I had become a believer. Quality build, quality glass, sharp and contrasty views on all of my scopes (f/5 to f/15). I truly love this EP. Worth both every penny and every star of the 5 I rated it. (Posted on 10/16/2018)

Having this eyepiece needs with for over a year, it has become my workhorse ep. The 24mm is the eyepiece that spends the most amount of time in my 102mm F6.5 scope. The best way I can summarize my impression on this episode is, I love it. It's the one eyepiece I use every time I am observing. On a few of my observing sessions it was the only episode used. If your on the fence thinking about picking up the ES 24mm, just do it. This will be an eyepiece that you'll have at the ready every time you set up your gear. (Posted on 10/16/2018)

This eyepiece is the perfect match for a Celestron C8. Combined with an f6.3 reducer, it will provide the widest possible unvignetted field of view you can get out of an 8" sct. On its own, it’s an amazing eyepiece offering a very confortable experience. In my eyepiece case I carry all ES82 plus this ES68 24mm I use the 2" eyepieces only for super wide field with my AR127 refractor. The ES68 24mm is the widest I use with the C8 and under dark sky, it’s my most used eyepiece. (Posted on 10/7/2018)

I have owned the ES 24mm 68deg eyepiece for 3 years for use on an 80mm f/7 ED triplet scope. It gives sharp edge to edge views with an immersive wide field experience. I have used an 82deg version and found I had to move my eye position too much to take in all of the view. Not only less expensive it also provides a better experience for me. It has become my most used eyepiece. (Posted on 10/7/2018)
