Product Description

This is a very good quality low power/wide field eyepiece that provides the widest field possible from a 1.25" eyepiece. Its field stop (the rim inside the eyepiece that determines the field of view) is the inside of the eyepiece barrel itself, so you'd have to go to a 2" eyepiece to get a wider field of view. It's ideal for capturing galaxy clusters, viewing emission and reflection nebulas in their entirety, scanning large and faint nebula remnants such as the Veil, etc. You can use the calculator below to see how wide a field it will give you with your particular scope. It has a rubber grip ring for comfortable use in cold weather. It provides a huge 8.9mm exit pupil with an f/4.5 Dobsonian reflector. As the eyes of most observers are unable to dilate to this size, this eyepiece will probably waste a good portion of the light-gathering capacity of a fast focal ratio scope. It is better suited to the longer focal ratios of refractors, Schmidt-Cassegrains, and Maksutov-Cassegrains than it is to reflectors with focal ratios shorter than f/6. At f/6 and above, it would be an excellent choice to give you the widest and brightest field possible from a 1.25" focuser telescope. The eye relief is long enough so that most eyeglass wearers will be able to see all, or virtually all, of the field with their glasses on. It is not parfocal with other Meade Series 4000 eyepieces.

I use a 40mm on my Mak 90 - it is great when tying to locate/view larger objects with a telescope that has a high focal length (Mak 90's have a 1250mm FL). Has geat eye relief so you can also use this on a refractor and pair it with a 2x or 3x Barlow and end up with 20mm and 13mm and take advantage of the eye relief... (Posted on 9/9/2019)

I have used this eyepiece in a C8 SCT and Meade ETX-125 Mak with good results. Nice eyepiece when you don't have a lot of money to spend on eyepieces. (Posted on 12/7/2018)

I have owned nearly every series 4000 eyepiece and they are a great value for the money. the 40mm will give you the sharpest views of larger objects like Andromeda and Orion. this was one of my most used eyepieces as i like sharpness and clarity as opposed to excessive magnification. If you're just starting out, they are a great value. I mostly used the 40, 26 and 20mm eyepieces but the higher powered ones from 15MM up perform very well. Used them mostly on a C9.25 and a Meade 8" LX200. If you need multiple eyepieces, buy the series 4000 set and save some money. Used this eyepiece for many years before I upgraded to TeleVue and series 5000. the price /performance ratio is worth the cost. (Posted on 12/3/2018)
