The Celestron Omni XLT 127 Schmidt-Cassegrain put the proven performance of the world-famous Celestron C5 SCT optical tube on a solid German equatorial mount - at a remarkably sensible price for a scope of its undeniable quality. It provides an excellent mix of performance, portability, stability, and features that any serious backyard astronomer can appreciate.

The optics of the Celestron C5 have long been acknowledged as among the finest small optics available. Even with the ability to use any optics in the world, NASA has still chosen to use C5 optics on Space Shuttle missions because of their performance. Do you deserve anything less than optics that are up to NASA standards?
For the observer whose observing interests are the entire Universe, the Omni XLT 127 has a lot to offer. It is exceptional for observing within the solar system. Its views of subtle lunar and planetary details are sharp and detailed, bringing the planets to vivid life in the eyepiece.

It has a sensibly large aperture that makes it surprisingly good for much deep space observing, as well. Binary stars and globular star clusters are well-resolved and vivid, with the contrasting colors of many binary systems showing nicely. Hundreds of nebulas and galaxies are visible, many of them showing significant detail and structure. Optically, this 5" Celestron can keep you happily observing for many years to come.

This Telescope's Optical System . . .

Schmidt-Cassegrain optical tube: 5" aperture (1250mm focal length f/10) aluminum tube, 11" long, weighing only 6.5 lbs. One-knob quick-release dovetail attachment to mount for fast assembly in the field. Guaranteed diffraction-limited optical performance, free from the chromatic aberration visible in achromatic refractors and the coma visible in fast focal ratio reflectors. Fully collimatable for optimum sharpness. Rear cell uses the standard SCT thread, so all SCT photo and visual accessories can be used without having to add a special adapter. A 1.25" SCT-type star diagonal/eyepiece holder is included as standard equipment.

Starbright XLT fully-multicoated: This state-of-the-art coatings package includes high reflectivity multilayer aluminum mirrors enhanced with titanium dioxide for high reflectivity, plus a unique combination of magnesium fluoride and hafnium dioxide antireflection coatings on both sides of the Schmidt corrector lens. Starbright XLT multicoatings give you higher light transmission for brighter deep space images and shorter exposure times during photography. They also visibly increase the contrast on subtle lunar, planetary, and nebula details when compared with a scope with standard coatings or multicoatings. For more information on the XLT multicoatings, click on the link in the support tab above.

Star diagonal: 90° viewing angle prism-type 1.25" star diagonal.

Eyepiece: Fully multicoated low power 1.25" 25mm (50x) eyepiece with a 1° field of view (twice the diameter of the full Moon).

Finderscope: 6 x 30mm straight-through achromatic design, with a wide 7° field of view. Focuses by loosening the trim ring behind the objective lens cell, screwing the lens cell in or out to focus, and tightening the trim ring to lock in the correct focus.

CG-4 German equatorial mount: The mount has setting circles in both right ascension and declination, worm gear drives and manual slow motion controls in both axes, a latitude scale and fine adjustment controls in both altitude and azimuth, two counterweights totaling 11 pounds so you can easily balance virtually any accessory load, and more. An optional dual axis DC drive/drive corrector is available for no-hands tracking of celestial objects and photography. It is not possible to upgrade to a computerized go-to drive system. For more details, click on the link in the support tab above.

Adjustable height tripod: The tripod has 1.75" diameter steel legs with a center leg brace for rigidity. It adjusts over a height range from 33" to 47". Vibration damping characteristics are excellent. The center leg brace is drilled to form a convenient accessory tray that holds 1.25" and 2" eyepiece to keep them up out of the dew-soaked grass.

Dovetail tube mount: A dovetail bar is attached to the underside of the scope's optical tube. The dovetail bar slips into a dovetail groove on the mount's equatorial head. Setup and takedown times are exceptionally fast, as a single large hand-tighten knob holds the optical tube in place. A second lock knob prevents the tube from sliding off the mount should the hand-tighten knob accidentally loosen while observing. The long length of the dovetail bar (it extends from the front of the optical tube to the rear) lets you slide the optical tube fore and aft in the mount to quickly balance the weight of any photographic or visual accessory load you might want to add.

Two-year warranty: All Celestron telescopes have a two-year warranty, double that of competitive scopes.

What can you see through this 127mm Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope?

With a relatively short 1250mm focal length and a light grasp 329 times that of the sharpest dark-adapted eye, the scope is capable of producing surprisingly bright wide-field images of the faint fuzzies outside the solar system - nebulas, galaxies, open star clusters, and more.

But those objects requiring high power and high contrast - globular clusters, close binary star pairs, lunar and planetary images, etc. - are not slighted in the least. Using optional eyepieces and/or a Barlow to boost the magnification, you can see subtle solar system details that are virtually invisible in smaller aperture scopes. You can study lunar craters, rilles, mountain ranges, and low contrast lunar ray detail. With reasonable seeing conditions, detail in Jupiter's cloud belts and the Great Red Spot (actually closer in color to the Faint Pink Spot at this point in time) are visible, as are dusky markings on the face of Saturn and Cassini's division in Saturn's brilliant rings.

Optically and mechanically refined, and very reasonable in cost for famous Celestron C5 5" Schmidt-Cassegrain optics, this Celestron Omni XLT 127 has enough optical performance to keep you busy for the rest of your life.

I bought this last fall as my first telescope and it has worked great. I've been able to see everything I've pointed this scope at. Highly recommended. (Posted on 12/26/2018)

I've had this scope for a few years now and it's been one of my favorites. The optical quality is excellent and the mount is very stable. I added the dual axis drive for tracking to complete the package. I would highly recommend this scope. (Posted on 10/30/2018)
