Product Description

This 82° 13mm Astro-Tech UWA eyepiece is an excellent medium high power/ultra wide field eyepiece with an outstanding price.  The focal length should hit the sweet spot on longer focal length telescopes and just be an absolute performer in all telescopes.

The optical designers used the latest computer design programs to optimize its performance. Its seven element/four group design uses low dispersion and high refractive index lenses and full multicoatings for high contrast, high resolution, and flat field images across a very wide 82° field of view. The lens edges have been blackened to improve contrast.  The eyepieces are parfocal within the UWA series.

The 13mm 82° Astro-Tech works with any telescope from a fast focal ratio reflector to a long focal length refractor or Maksutov. It's particularly good with Dobsonians and fast focal ratio refractors, providing high magnification with a very wide field of view for observing smaller globular clusters and compact nebulas.

A 10" f/4.5 Dobsonian reflector will have a 1° field at 82x with this eyepiece. This gives you a full four minutes to observe as an object drifts from one side of the sharp field of view to the other before you have to reposition the scope. A 4" f/7 refractor like the Astro-Tech 102ED will have a 1.6° field (over three times the diameter of the full Moon) at 51x.

At 12mm, the eye relief is good, although eyeglass wearers will still see a somewhat vignetted image. This isn't as much a problem as you might think, as the 82° field of view is so wide that even non-eyeglass wearers have trouble seeing the whole field at once. This is an eyepiece that shows you a "lost in space" view of space for a true full-immersion observing experience. With its unconstricted view, your eye relaxes, allowing you to easily use the "averted vision" technique to study faint details across a huge field of view.

The eyepiece has a soft fold-down rubber eyecup and comes with dust covers for both ends of the eyepiece.

I mistakenly ordered the 10mm instead of this 13mm, Jandi helped switch the order to the 13 for some great service! Got my eyepiece today, and took it for a drive, I couldn’t be happier! The stars were sharp points all across the FoV and had great contrast with the colors of the stars. Will definitely get more of this series of eyepieces, thank you Jandi and Astronomics!! I got this eyepiece and the 7mm UWA as well. They are both fantastic and I am very happy with the purchase. (Posted on 9/22/2023)

I must say that this eyepiece has great sharpness and contrast. I've used this eyepiece in my 6 f/6.7 APO and my 6" f/12.5 Mak-Cass. I'm looking to add the 10mm and the 7mm next. I have the 13mm and the 16mm. (Posted on 8/21/2023)

I just received this eyepiece today and I tested it tonight in my 4" F/7 Astro-Tech refractor. This eyepiece reminded me of the Nagler Type I eyepieces--sharp across most of the FOV but with some kidney bean effect. However, at this price, I can forgive the kidney beaning. It would be difficult to find another 82 degree AFOV eyepiece this good at this price. (Posted on 10/4/2022)
