Product Description

This 2" Celestron Luminos 23mm eyepiece is a six-lens design with a very wide 82° field and minimal field curvature. This makes it particularly well-suited for use with flat field telescopes such as Celestron EdgeHD and Meade Advanced Coma-Free flat field catadioptric scopes and refractors with field flatteners. an excellent low power, It is also well-matched to big Dobsonian scopes. It has a 5.1mm exit pupil with an f/4.5 scope. That's an exit pupil more in line with the maximum dilated pupil of most observers' eyes to give you the full light-gathering of your big scope.

The 23mm Celestron Luminos gives you no-holds-barred low power deep space views with scopes having focal ratios down to f/4. It is marvelous for open clusters, nebulas, and globular clusters with any scope, and is very effective with fast f/ratio reflectors and refractors. That being said, it must also be noted that its very wide field also makes it convenient for moderate power lunar and planetary observing with larger Dobsonians, as you have much longer to observe before the planet drifts out of the field and the scope has to be repositioned. The calculator below will show you how wide a field you can expect with your particular telescope.

I love the Luminos Eyepiece series. I have the 15mm, 19mm and 23mm and all work together as they are para-focal. They are affordable and have a great FOV. (Posted on 10/18/2019)

The 23mm Luminos is one monster of an eyepiece at 2 lbs. so weight is definitely an important consideration. Overall, it is a pretty good eyepiece but does tend to suffer at short f-ratios (I used it in an f/6 APO) with falloff at the edges. There is also a massive “ring of fire” at the field edge that is painfully noticeable at night and renders it nearly unusable during the day. In a long focal length scope such as an SCT or Mak, it will probably do well enough. The twist up eyeguard is very large and I found it difficult to use comfortably. The long eye relief does cause blackout problems if you get too close to the eye lens.

Overall the Luminos is pretty good, but unless you have a long focal length scope, you are probably better off spending a bit more on an ES 24/82. (Posted on 8/30/2019)

Large and heavy, but great optics. View is best in the center and does fall off near the edge, but an excellent option to pair with Celestron Scopes. (Posted on 7/24/2019)

Excellent DSO eyepeice, used with 16"F/4.5 and 12.5"F/5 scopes without a parrcorr. (Posted on 8/4/2017)

Large and heavy and with a problem with light scatter. A glow around the outside 15% of the field of view makes the Luminos live up to its name. Regrettably. Try something else. (Posted on 8/4/2017)
