I feel somewhat obligated to share my thoughts on those 62° ES eyepieces.
I've been an avid ES eyepiece user since their 82° series being put to the market. I tried almost all their series sans the latest 52°. That being said, I will try not to be biased as I also own other high-end eyepieces, ZAO, Docter UWA and etc.
The 62° on paper sounds to be the reborn of the older Meade 5000 super plossl. I've got a pair of Meade 5000 SPL 14mm for planetary viewing at high power and I've found the pair could stay in my gear box for long as their FL is unique and the quality is rather good. Little scattering, very sharp on the axis and eye placement is comfortable for binoviewing. In light of this, I expected to experience a good quality out of the new ES series as well.
I've tried many EP pairs around 20mm for mid-to-high power viewing but always sold them to look for the "next best" ones. When the 62° series showed up on the market I jumped in immediately and bought a 20mm pair. After using the pair for a couple of nights I felt somewhat obligated to share my thoughts as they are indeed great!
Good optical quality aside, I also enjoy the floating sensation with the eyeguard folded down, the so called "lens-less" sensation when people rave about using the RKE 28mm. The thin profile around the top rim must have something to do with this. For DSO viewing, this is really addicting, not to mention it's much less finicky for the eye placement than with the RKE 28mm. As for high power viewing, again, the scattering is minimum, the on-axis sharpness is great, and the comfort is also good.
Simply put, a great EP overall, in particular for binoviewing thanks to its small profile and light weight. I'm waiting for the sale again to take a plunge for a 26mm pair. (Posted on 11/11/2018)
