This Kendrick heater is designed to fit behind and around the secondary mirror housing of your Astro-Tech AT8RC, AT10RC, or AT12RC Ritchey Chrétien astrograph to prevent the formation of dew on the secondary mirror during long exposure astrophotography. Its flat and flexible split ring design is very easy to install. It lays flat on the back of the secondary mirror housing and is held firmly in contact with the housing by a thin film of user-provided silicone glue (RTV).
The Kendrick heater is thermally insulated with 1/8" (3mm) thick neoprene sponge foam that is bonded to the heater element. The foam helps direct the heat into the secondary mirror housing and aids in preventing excessive heat loss into the atmosphere for better heater performance.
The split-ring 12 VDC heater is powered through a pair of thin permanently-attached 18” wires terminated by a male RCA plug. To avoid diffraction effects in your images, these wires are held flat against one of the secondary mirror’s spider vanes using silicone adhesive or electrician’s tape. The RCA plug is led up the inside of the optical tube to your scope’s front end ring and is taped to the outside of the ring. A separate 6’ male-to-male RCA cable is connected to the 18" cable and RCA plug using a supplied female-to-female RCA adapter to complete the connection to your heater control unit.
The split-ring heater draws 0.4 amps at full power (power consumption at normal operating levels will generally be 40% to 60% less than this, as the normal standard controller setting is medium to low). The heater ring’s outside diameter is 3.5" (90 mm), with an inside diameter of 2.625" (65 mm). Its overall thickness is 5/32" (4 mm).
