Single shot color CCD cameras such as the Celestron Skyris 618C, 445C, and 274C color planetary cameras are not only very sensitive across the visible spectrum, but also into the infrared portion of the spectrum that is invisible to the eye. High end apochromatic telescopes may correct for chromatic aberration, but they are not designed to correct for this unseen IR light. Since the color camera records this otherwise invisible infrared light, as well as the visible spectrum, it can add a haze of extra light to your images that can make them look unfocused. Blocking this infrared (IR) light provides the best color balance and sharpness in your lunar, solar, and planetary astroimages.
The body of this Celestron Skyris IR filter has male and female C-mount camera lens threads (25.4 mm x 32 TPI), rather than the T-mount threading used on many CCD cameras. The Skyris IR filter is designed to thread only into C-mount opening on the front plate of the Celestron Skyris cameras and The Imaging Source astronomy cameras that use C-mount threads for connection to a nosepiece. Back focus is 17.5mm. It is not usable with CCD cameras having T-threads.
The Celestron IR filter has dichroic IR coatings on a substrate of high-quality, fully multi-coated optical glass that is a mere 0.3mm thick. It has a 19.5mm clear aperture so there is no vignetting with any Skyris camera. It blocks the unwanted IR light while passing more than 94% of the entire visual spectrum, maintaining color fidelity.
