Product Description

This Meade 20mm waterproof 2" Ultra Wide is an exceptional medium focal length eyepiece with a very wide 82° field of view. It is O-ring sealed and nitrogen-purged to be 100% waterproof.

This 2" Meade eyepiece uses seven optical elements for sharp, well-corrected performance across a very wide 82° field of view. With an eye relief of 17mm, it is quite usable with eyeglasses, and its twist-up eyecup lets you match the eye relief to your eyesight and/or eyeglass use.

The 82° field of the Meade 20mm Ultra Wide is so wide that you can't see the field stop without moving your head from side to side, so the eyepiece seems to disappear in use. It gives you the feeling of looking through a picture window into space, rather than through a constricted tube, as with a conventional narrow field eyepiece. This unrestricted view is very impressive with fast focal ratio/short focal length scopes such as fast apo refractors or Dobsonian reflectors. For example, a 10" f/4.5 Dobsonian reflector will have a full 1.4° field at 57x with this eyepiece, and a bright 4.4mm exit pupil. A 5.1" f/6 refractor will have a  very big 2.1° field at 39x, with a 3.3mm exit pupil. Even with a long focal length 8" f/10 SCT, it provides a hefty 0.82° field at 100x with a 2mm exit pupil.

The eyepiece calculator that you'll find in the "Formulas" tab above will show you just how much magnification and field of view this eyepiece will provide with your particular telescope.

Optically this is a superb eyepiece for the money. It reminds me of my old 20mm Type 2 Nagler but with better eye relief. There is a bit of glare on bright objects like the Moon but nothing objectionable. Stars are tack sharp to the edge in my f/7 refractor. Saturn is a wonderful sight even at just 36x.

Now, the eyecup reminds me of the 23mm Celestron Luminos, large and awkward. You can get pretty comfortable with this one, but you can't quite block out stray light from outside. Honestly, the eye relief isn't really enough to need an adjustable eyecup anyway. I'd prefer a regular rubber eyeguard.

That being said, if you can get on with the ergonomics of this eyepiece, it is a fantastic value. (Posted on 9/8/2019)

I have all 4 of the Meaded 82 Ultra Wide's. 20mm (2") , 14mm (1.25"), 8.8mm (1.25") and 5.5mm (1.25). Like others said, they are large and heavier than other eye pieces. But they offer crystal clear views. The 20mm gives me a wider view than my 25mm Zhumell Plossel eye piece with more magnification. The other 3 eye peices are a little lighter even with the adapter, so depending on your setup, may need to adjust balance when switching them out. I have enough friction in my dob alt bearing that it doesn't matter, I kind of balance inbetween them. I love them! (Posted on 7/22/2019)

I purchased the 20 mm as my second 2" wide view eyepiece and I just love it! Originally used in my Orion XT8 Intelliscope, it is now one of my main eyepieces in may Apertura AD12. I also have the 5.5 mm in this series and I love it. I put these on par with the ES 82 series of which I own 3. (Posted on 7/22/2019)

I bought this eyepiece for star parties and felt safer using it with groups of people instead of my more expensive optics. I soon realized and was supported my Astronomy peers that this eyepiece is extremely capable. It is quite bright and appears free of coma. I often use it along with my premium optics as i find it very comfortable. Nice work Meade & great price Astronomics!! (Posted on 1/1/2019)

It is large, and it is heavy. But, its probably the best value for your dollar in a Ultra Widefield EP. The images are clean and sharp, though in a fast reflector it will show you some field curvature at F/5. Hardly an issue, as the field of view is so vast you won't really notice any edge of field distortions. On-axis it is very good. I own all the new 5k UWA's, I'd recommend them all. Optically this is a very fine ocular that is just one step down from the premium brands, but I did not find this comfortable to look through. The housing around the eye lens is so broad that I find it hard to get my eye in proper position without bumping cheek or nose against the EP. I did find the ergonomics less bothersome while using with a dob. Bowed head positions with refractors were a bit of a struggle. Decloaking helps, but the upper housing really should be tapered. This is one of my favorite eyepieces despite its weight and hand grenade size. Anything near the horizon and I have to re-balance the scope, but the views it gives are definitely worth it. (Posted on 10/12/2018)

I feel this Meade 82 ultra wide series is one of the best you can get for the money invested. This 20 mm is a great quality example. (Posted on 10/10/2018)
