Product Description

This Meade 25mm HD-60 eyepiece is the latest medium power addition to the renowned Meade Series 5000 eyepiece line. Its advanced six-element optical design uses premium-grade and exotic glass for the best possible performance and image brightness. It is super fully multi-coated, with blackened lens edges for enhanced contrast. The Meade 25mm HD-60 offers a large 60° apparent field of view that is flat and tack sharp right to the edge. In addition, there is as much as a 40% improvement in chromatic aberration levels and edge distortion over traditional Plössls.

With a short focal length refractor the new Meade 25mm HD-60 is a low power eyepiece well suited to scanning the crowded star clouds of Sagittarius, observing galaxy clusters, framing the more compact emission nebulas with the black of space, observing the nebulosity around the Pleiades, etc. With the 430mm focal length f/6 Astro-Tech AT72ED, for example, it provides a magnification a tad over 17x, a field nearly seven times as wide as the full Moon, and a 4.16mm exit pupil that is ideal for rich field observing.

The 25mm Meade HD-60 is also a good choice for medium power observing with long focal length refractors, reflectors, and catadioptric scopes. On an 8" f/10 catadioptric, for example, it yields 80x, with a 0.75° field that is half again as wide as the full Moon. This is a very useful magnification for observing compact planetary nebulas and globular clusters, as well as lunar observing. Its high contrast makes observing small features along the lunar terminator a nightly delight as the terminator creeps across the face of the Moon.

Eye relief is a long 17mm and a twist-up rubber eyeguard provides viewing comfort and improved contrast, with eyeglasses or without. Its 1.25" chromed barrel is threaded for standard 1.25" filters, and a shallow safety groove is machined into the barrel. This groove engages the thumbscrew or compression ring of your focuser or star diagonal to prevent the eyepiece from falling should the thumbscrew loosen accidentally during use.

I purchased the 25mm HD-60 to replace a very good 26mm Meade plossl that came with my LX70 120mm refractor. It immediately became my favorite finder eyepiece! It's sharp and bright across the field of view. It's superior to my Russell 32mm 60 degree as a finder and even out in dark skies. I give it 5 stars, because it's the best available for the price. It's also nice on open clusters, during outreach, as views are sharp and eye relief works for eyeglass wearers. (Posted on 9/9/2019)

Well constructed and corrected eyepiece that is sharp nearly to the edge in my 6" f/6.7 Newtonian. Optically I'd rate it 4.5 stars where a Panoptic is 5 stars. It is rather large and heavy compared to a plossl but the wider field makes up for it. The twist-up eye guard is a nice feature for blocking ambient light. An excellent eyepiece for the money. Got this eye piece a few years ago as a gift and I have been using it in both my scopes. It has been added into my primary rotation for planet and moon observing. During the eclipse I had this one paired to my 8 inch SCT. (Posted on 7/24/2019)
