This Meade 30mm 2" Ultra Wide eyepiece uses a six-lens design that is superior to any previous wide field eyepiece Meade has ever produced. While easily the most expensive Meade eyepiece made, it is a surprising best-seller, particularly with owners of large premium-quality Dobsonians who swear by its huge exit pupil and “picture window on space” performance. The 30mm Ultra Wide is an excellent low power eyepiece with an exceptionally wide field of view, one so wide you have to move your head from side to side to see it all.
It is particularly suited to get the maximum image brightness and field of view out of big Dobsonian scopes, but will work well with any scopes that can use 2” eyepieces, even an f/15 Maksutov. This eyepiece has a very large 6.7mm exit pupil with an f/4.5 scope, larger than some observers’ eyes can dilate. That can effectively waste some of the scope’s light gathering capacity, as some of the full light cone will fall on the observer’s iris, rather than entering his or her eye. Even so, some observers are willing to trade a little light gathering for the immense field of view of this 82° apparent field eyepiece. This eyepiece very much provides a “picture window of space” view. If you can afford the size, weight, and cost, this is an eyepiece you will treasure for years to come.
Please note the 47 ounce weight of this superb eyepiece, however. It may pose a balance problem with some Dobsonians when you switch to the 30mm from a much lighter shorter focal length 1.25” eyepiece. Its use may require some temporary rebalancing of your scope, or the use of a TeleVue #TVEQC equalizing adapter with 1.25” eyepieces to avoid balance problems.
The eyepiece calculator that you'll find in the "Formulas" tab above will show you just how much magnification and field of view this eyepiece will provide with your particular telescope.
