Product Description

This new Meade 5.5mm waterproof Ultra Wide Angle eyepiece is an outstanding short focal length eyepiece for high magnification observing with all telescope types. It is O-ring sealed and nitrogen-purged to be 100% waterproof.

This 1.25" eyepiece uses seven optical elements for sharp, well-corrected performance across a very wide 82° field of view. At 13mm, its usable eye relief is quite long for such a short focal length eyepiece, and its twist-up eyecup lets you match the eye relief to your eyesight and/or eyeglass use.

The 82° field of the Meade 5.5mm Ultra Wide is so wide that you can't see the field stop without moving your head from side to side, so the eyepiece seems to disappear in use. It gives you the feeling of looking through a wide window into space, rather than down a constricted tube, as with a conventional narrow field eyepiece.

The Meade 5.5mm Ultra Wide eyepiece has a 0.55mm exit pupil with an f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. This is very close to the 0.5mm exit pupil that most observers consider to be the smallest usable for high magnification observing before the image becomes too dim to be useful (in this case 364x with an 8" f/10 scope, or about 45x per inch of aperture).

The eyepiece calculator that you'll find in the "Formulas" tab above will show you just how much magnification and field of view this eyepiece will provide with your particular telescope.

I own multiple eye pieces from several different companies. But by far this is my favorite. Great eye relief and it's like looking through rifle scope, not a straw! Great clear optic!! (Posted on 9/26/2019)

The eye relief and field of view make this eyepiece worth it. There are rare times to use this eyepiece to its full potential, but when the seeing allows, it is very clear and easy on the eyes. Haven't found a use for the twist up eyecup, as you get better field of view when your eye is closer to lens.

Used on f/5 and f/6 reflectors, f/15 refractors, performs well in all. Does not perform as well in Orion starblast 4.5 or ST-80 refractor, but that is to be expected.

I have the Meade UWA 20 mm and 5.5 mm. These bracket my ES 82s. I consider the Meade UWA as very comparable optically to my ES 82s and recommend them often. Nice that they cost less. I use the 5.5 in my ETX 80/F5, SkyScanner 100/F4 and Apertura AD12 12" F5 Dob. It produces produce crisp clear images that are well corrected to the edges. Highly recommended! (Posted on 7/22/2019)

The 5.5mm Meade UWA is a budget priced eyepiece that performs like a premium eyepiece. This eyepiece is a newer focal length in the Meade UWA series. It has a larger eye lens which helps with eye relief and comfort. There are no blackouts with the 5.5mm Meade UWA. This eyepiece is sharp to the field stop in a 120mm f/7.5 APO and a 60mm f/6 APO. It is outstanding for lunar, planetary, and globular cluster observations. (Posted on 1/13/2019)

This is my go to high powered eyepiece. Very comfortable to use. Large eye lens and good eye relief. Sharp to the edge in my 8" SCT and 5" Mak when seeing allows for higher powers. Also works very well in my fast refractors. Only downside is the thick grease that makes moving the eye cup up and down a bit of a hassle. I always use it with the eye cup in the up position, so I just store it that way. All in all, a great eyepiece. (Posted on 1/13/2019)

I Bought a 8.8 Series 5000 Eyepiece and was so impressed by it I bought a number of these eyepieces, including the 5.5mm. As with any High Power eyepiece, it works best with exceptional skies. Extendable eye guard is a nice feature. As good as my TeleVue's at a much better price. Clear crisp views thru my C9.25 and my 70mm apo. Nice 82 degree wide-field views. Highly recommended! It is absolutely true what is said about this eyepiece. All the eyepieces in the UWA series are notable for punching above their weight, but the 5.5mm is magic I tell ya! Great edge correction, plenty of brightness, great contrast of black to pinpoint light on my 10" F5 dob. If you like looking at lunar details or finding some of the smaller DSOs (my favorite) this is the winner pound for pound! (Posted on 11/6/2018)

An excellent high power eyepiece in my 6" Newt. (1010mm f.l.) and 80mm refractor (910mm f.l.). Sharp edge to edge of the wide field with great contrast. I remove my glasses for small exit pupils and the eye relief is fine. I like the twist-up eye guard as it helps in proper eye spacing and protection from ambient side light. I do out-reach, too, and it keeps the top lens from getting all gunked up so cleaning is usually slight if at all. One of my favorite eyepieces if the atmosphere allows. (Posted on 10/27/2018)

Good sharpness towards the edge of the field, no EoFB, tight eye relief that is just enough to be comfortable when decloaked. I find my 11 T6 a touch sharper and a little more comfortable to look through. I do see chromatic smear near the edge in this ocular, a bit bothersome on planets but negligible for stars & DSOs. I recently got this eyepiece, it is a very good high magnification eyepiece for my 90mm refractor. The wide angle allows me to keep objects in view longer and the eye relief is very good for this focal length. I can wear glasses while using it but to get the full field of view it is better to take off my glasses. In the price range I don’t think they get any better than this and really does a fine job. Used this to get up close with M15. I have all most all of the 82 wide angle Meade eyepieces. Good value and great views. (Posted on 10/12/2018)
