Series 5000 Extra Wide Angle

The Meade Series 5000 Extra Wide Angle 2” eyepieces have a huge 100° apparent field of view with excellent full field sharpness. Each eyepiece uses a nine element optical design, using several different types of exotic glass to optimize the performance. The result is very good edge-to-edge resolution and high contrast. Looking at a deep space nebula or galaxy through a Series 5000 Ultra Wide Angle eyepiece, where there is no field stop to cut off the image, provides a “picture window view” that may well be the next best thing to actually being in space.

Premium grade optical glass is used, with individually-tuned multilayer antireflection coatings for maximum light transmission. The lens edges and all internal metal surfaces are blackened to maximize image contrast. The Series 5000 Ultra Wides are parfocal, requiring little or no refocusing when switching eyepieces within the series. They have long eye relief for eyeglass use. A soft roll-down rubber eyecup is standard. Dust covers are provided for both ends of the eyepiece.

Each eyepiece has a wide rubber grip ring for a comfortable and positive grip in cold or damp weather. A slanted safety groove is cut into the 2” barrel to keep the eyepiece from falling should an eyepiece holder’s thumbscrew loosen slightly during use. The slant of the safety groove keeps it from snagging on your star diagonal’s compression ring, as can happen with an eyepiece with a square-cut safety groove.
