The Meade Series 5000 Ultra Wide Angle eyepieces have a huge 82° apparent field of view with excellent full field sharpness. They are six and seven element optical designs, each using several different types of exotic glass to optimize the performance. The result is very good edge-to-edge resolution and high contrast. Looking at a deep space nebula or galaxy through a Series 5000 Ultra Wide Angle eyepiece provides a “picture window view” that may well be the next best thing to actually being in space.
They are O-ring sealed and nitrogen-purged to be waterproof; to prevent internal fogging in the eyepiece on cold nights; to keep the interior dust-and fungus-free; and to make each eyepiece easier to clean, as there is no risk of excess cleaning solution getting trapped between the lens elements.
Premium grade optical glass is used, with individually-tuned multilayer antireflection coatings for maximum light transmission. The lens edges and all internal metal surfaces are blackened to maximize image contrast. All Series 5000 Ultra Wides are parfocal, requiring little or no refocusing when switching eyepieces within the series. They have long eye relief for eyeglass use.
The barrel of each eyepiece is rubber clad for a comfortable and positive grip in cold or damp weather. A rubber rim at the top of the barrel keeps eyeglasses from getting scratched. A twist of the wrist and the entire barrel extends smoothly to position your eye at the most comfortable eye relief distance. Another twist and the barrel retracts again for eyeglass use. A safety groove is cut into the chrome barrel to keep the eyepiece from falling should an eyepiece holder’s thumbscrew loosen slightly during use.
