Product Description

This is a very good medium high to high power eyepiece (the power depends on the focal length of your scope) for observing lunar and planetary detail, resolving globular clusters, picking up small planetary nebulas against a stellar background, etc.

It has a short eye relief that will limit the field for eyeglass wearers. Those who must wear eyeglasses while observing due to severe astigmatism would probably be better off using a Barlow and a longer focal length eyepiece with longer eye relief to reach this focal length, rather than buying this eyepiece for use on its own.

This 8mm TeleVue Plössl was rated the best available in its focal length in a recent test report of 31 eyepieces in Sky & Telescope magazine.

The 8mm TV Ploessl is an excellent eyepiece for lunar and planetary observing on scopes with tracking mounts, especially for the price. Focus is sharp, contrast is high, and there is no internal glare. It has a very slightly warm color bias, which some folks tend to overstate. It has a very tiny bit better resolution than the also very good 8mm RKE, but my feeling is that the 6 and 10 ZAO2s are a tiny bit better still. The 8mm TV is also really good for closely examining globular clusters. I use mine in an 8" f/6 Ostahowski Dob and in a 5" f/12 D&G refractor. As others have said, eye relief is really short. This eyepiece is a reference standard. The 8mm PLÖSSL provides sharp clear views with all of my refractors. Over the years I have purchased several and given them to a friends and family. This way they have at least one good eyepiece among the random Kellners and Modified Achromats that are bundled with some inexpensive telescopes. (Posted on 10/17/2018)

This is a great eyepiece for those on a budget. Although, these do not provide immersive views (which shouldn't be expected for a low f/l buget eyepiece such as this), images are bright and quality is good as is expected of a Televue eyepiece. However if you wear glasses and prefer to leave them on during observing, I would suggest a different eyepiece, as the eye-relief is extremely small. (Posted on 10/14/2018)

Astronomic's explanation concerning this EP is spot on. If your new to astronomy I would advise you to do your home work. Why put a $500 EP on a $300 scope? For me eye relief is a major 'comfort' factor (at least 12mm). Baader and Pentax have great zooms that can save you big $. Field of view is another major consideration. Go big or go home? Short on cash? Wait, and save up some more $ and get the best you can afford. Why put an $40 EP on $3000 scope? Clear skies. (Posted on 8/4/2017)

On axis this is one of the sharper planetary eyepieces ive used. More comfortable then stated eye relief would suggest. Would recommend to anyone who doesn't need to use glasses while observing. Also great for deep sky. (Posted on 8/4/2017)
