Product Description

This Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED apochromatic refractor has:
• 80mm f/7.5 apochromatic doublet optics
• dual-speed 2" Crayford focuser with 10:1 ratio fine focusing
• 2" dielectric star diagonal with 2" and 1.25" eyepiece holders
• two 1.25" Long Eye Relief eyepieces (20mm and 5mm)
• 8 x 50mm right-angle finderscope
• dovetail shoe for installing on a Celestron CG-5 mount or any Vixen-style altazimuth or German equatorial mount
• two-year warranty

The Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED from Celestron uses a crown glass element, an ED glass element, and state-of-the-art optical multicoatings in its apochromatic ED doublet optics. The result is images that are essentially free of the annoying halo of unfocused violet light (chromatic aberration) that mars the view of bright stars and solar system objects in lesser refractors, even at very high magnifications. In addition, there is no loss in contrast such as you will find in reflector and catadioptric scopes that have a secondary or diagonal mirror hanging in the light path to scatter light.

The 80mm Sky-Watcher doublet optics are even more appealing when you consider that this Sky-Watcher apo is loaded with features other manufacturers charge extra for (or don't even have available) - such as an 8 x 50mm right-angle finderscope, a 2" dielectric star diagonal with 1.25" and 2" compression ring accessory holders, two 1.25" LE (Long Eye Relief) eyepieces (LE20mm and LE5mm); and a foam-lined aluminum-clad carrying case.

The Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED has enough premium optical performance to let you use it on an altazimuth or equatorial mount as the heart of your observing system. In addition, it is also a natural as a lightweight grab-and-go scope for spur-of-the-moment backyard astronomy, a top-notch travel scope to take across town or around the world, and a nifty astrograph to piggyback on a larger scope for serious wide field imaging. Considering its surprisingly low price for an apochromatic doublet, adding in the extra features you get at no extra cost, and in view of the great optical performance that comes as standard equipment, the 80mm Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED is a terrific buy!

Features of this Sky-Watcher telescope . . .

Apochromatic ED doublet refractor optics: 80mm (3.1") aperture, 600mm focal length, f/7.5 focal ratio.  The ED element is precision-polished from high grade ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass. This ED element produces superior sharpness and color correction by minimizing the chromatic aberration, the "false" color fringing seen around bright objects when light rays pass through standard crown-and-flint doublet objectives. The result is to reduce spurious color halos and fringing to vanishingly low levels.

Fully multicoated optics: Each air-to-glass surface in the Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED doublet objective lens has MHC (Metallic High-Transmission Coating) antireflection multicoatings on all air-to-glass surfaces for high light transmission, minimal light scatter, and excellent contrast.

Internal light baffles: Contrast-enhancing internal light baffles in the tube and focuser drawtube and a specially darkened tube interior provide dark sky backgrounds and high terrestrial contrast.

Dew shield: The supplied dew shield slows the formation of dew on the lens in cold weather to extend your undisturbed observing time. It also improves the contrast, similar to the effect of the lens shade on a camera lens, when observing during the day or when there is excessive ambient light at night, such as a neighbor's backyard security light. The 5.4 pound optical tube measures 23.82" long, including the dew shield. A slip-on metal dust cap is standard.

Dual speed 2" Crayford focuser: The precision-made no-backlash focuser has dual-speed focusing. There are two coarse focusing knobs. The right knob also has a smaller concentric knob with 10:1 reduction gear microfine focusing. This provides exceptionally precise image control during high magnification visual observing and critical DSLR or CCD imaging. The large focus knobs have ribbed gripping surfaces so they are easy to operate, even while wearing gloves or mittens in cold weather. Lock knobs lets you adjust the tension on the drawtube to accommodate varying eyepiece/photo accessory loads, as well as firmly lock in a photographic focus.

2" dielectric star diagonal: The supplied standard equipment 2" mirror star diagonal of the Evostar 80ED slips into the focuser drawtube's 2" eyepiece/accessory holder. The 2" diagonal has 99% reflectivity dielectric mirror coatings for high light transmission. A supplied 1.25" accessory adapter slips into the 2" diagonal to let you also use 1.25" eyepieces. The 1.25" accessory adapter can also be inserted directly into the 2" accessory holder on the focuser drawtube to let you use a 1.25" image erecting diagonal, or 1.25" photographic accessories.

Two 1.25" eyepieces: Two long eye relief 1.25" eyepieces are supplied: a 20mm giving a magnification of 30x and a 5mm giving a magnification of 120x.

Mounting dovetail: The Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED apo has dual hinged split-ring tube rings and a dovetail mounting bar that fits directly into the Vixen-style dovetail slot on the head of many of the most popular medium capacity altazimuth and German equatorial mounts. Such mounts include the Astro-Tech Voyager II altazimuth and the Celestron AVX Advanced Series go-to equatorial, among others.

Finderscope: The Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED comes with an 8 x 50mm right-angle finderscope that is fully-multicoated to insure maximum brightness and contrast.

Shipping/storage case: The scope comes in foam-fitted aluminum-clad shipping/storage case.

Two-year warranty: The Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED doublet apo is protected by a two-year limited warranty against flaws in materials and workmanship.

A great beginner astrophotographers telescope, with it's short focal length, your tracking/guiding doesn't have to be perfect to still get good photos. I highly recommend this scope! Be sure to pair it with the 0.85 Focal Reducer/Flattener for best results! My camera has a small sensor size, I don't have an issue with or without the FR, Larger sensor sizes may require it's use. Great views. Sharp and free from any noticeable chromatic aberration. Excellent package for the money. The case is a little on the flimsy side, but acceptable. The included 2” diagonal is very nice, and the eyepieces are very usable. 80mm is a nice general purpose scope for low power views and astrophotography. I found the scope somewhat lacking for high power views of Saturn and Jupiter, but that was expected. (Review based on early 2017 model). (Posted on 8/23/2019)

This is a great all around performer for visual and AP. Once in focus I get superb razor sharp views with no CA. My only cons to this scope are the recent increase in price and the dew shield is not retractable (you can remove it, but this unacceptably exposes the lens) so the scope/case are not really airline carry-on size. I use this telescope for mainly for astrophotography and it exceeds my expectations. Comes with lots of extras and gives you great views. Great beginning or intermediate telescope for those wishing to do astrophotography. I have owned this telescope for over a year now and have not out grown it! (Posted on 1/5/2019)

A few months back I used to use this scope before upgrading to a smaller lightweight telescope with a lower focal length to obtain better astrophotography photos, this telescope being the ASTRO-TECH AT72EDII REFRACTOR OTA FPL-53 F/6. Overall with using filters in my light polluted backyard the photos came out pretty good depending how many photos were stacked to reduce the noise levels from my Nikon D5300 and the settings in post processing in photoshop, etc. If you are a beginner in astrophotography or just someone that wants a new telescope this is a good one. SkyWatcher is a great brand with a great 80mm Doublet scope. I used it as a guide scope on a 10inch OTA. The 80mm is great on it's own too. It gives clear views on many nights as it is portable when traveling. I would highly recommend this scope for any one to buy. (Posted on 12/27/2018)

I was in the market for an affordable portable refractor, and after reading many reviews, I settled on the Sky-Watcher 80mm ED Pro. The 80mm ED Pro has very good optics, is fast to cool down and is very light weight. The telescope has given me views that compare to refractors costing much much more. The optics are very sharp, contrast is very high and has no chromatic aberration. When viewing the crescent Moon there was no evidence of false color anywhere. Deep-sky performance has also been very good. The Orion Nebula, M42, showed stunning detail. I am very pleased with this scope! The 80mm ED's, 600mm focal length f/7.5, objective lens delivers excellent views of deep sky objects and has enough aperture to keep you thrilled all night long. You can push magnification higher than the stated limits and still maintain a sharp view.

The Sky-Watcher’s focuser is excellent, offering dual-speed focusing at 10:1 which really allows you to approach accurate focus with precision. You also get a solidly built transport case, a 2-inch diagonal and two eyepieces that are surprisingly good. It’s a great scope capable of some really impressive views. (Posted on 11/19/2018)

This is a perfect scope for the beginner astrophotographer. The shorter focal length is forgiving if your mount is not tracking perfectly. If you try start our with to long of a focal length it will make things more difficult and you will be more likely to become frustrated. There are a ton of objects in the range of this very versatile scope. (Posted on 11/6/2018)

I purchased the SW ProED 80 as my second telescope, with my first being the Orion 8inch f/3.9 Newtonian Astrograph, which any long timers here will know that wasn't the best choice in a first scope. Least to say learning astronomy and astro-imaging on that first scope was not easy. A couple years later I decided I wanted an easier to set up (no collimation!!!) and lighter. All together my newt and my SW NEQ-6 Mount weighs over 110lbs which kills me moving around haha. But the ProED 80 was an easy choice. You get a hard case, finder scope, finder mount, tube rings + vixen mount and even eyepieces!! For the price you might be thinking the optics aren't that great but rest assured even on brighter stars such as Sirius chromatic abberation is nearly non-existant. I highly recommend this scope for any one considering it. (Posted on 10/6/2018)
