Product Description

Just like the 8mm TeleVue Ethos before it, the TeleVue 6mm Ethos eyepiece once again raises the bar for shorter focal length eyepieces. It expands the apparent field of view to an astonishing 100°, compared to the 50° field typical of most shorter focal length eyepieces. You can use the field of view calculator below to see just how much sky the 6mm Ethos can reveal with your telescope.

The 6mm Ethos is designed for no-holds-barred high power solar system and deep space observing with any telescope. However, its very wide field makes it particularly convenient for lunar and planetary observing with Dobsonians. It gives you twice as long to observe with a Dob before an object drifts out of the field and the scope has to be repositioned than you get with orthos, Plössls, and similar narrower field eyepieces.

There is a soft rolldown eyecup to shield the eye from ambient light (from a neighbor's security light, for example) and improve the image contrast. With a usable eye relief of 15mm, the 6mm Ethos might normally somewhat vignette the field of view for some eyeglass wearers. However, since the 100° field is so wide that you can't see the full field without having to move your head from side to side to take it all in anyway, vignetting in the conventional sense is not a problem.

The 6mm Ethos has all the virtues that astronomers have come to expect from a TeleVue eyepiece: high contrast, comfortable eye relief, and full field sharpness - with well-controlled astigmatism, field curvature, lateral color, angular magnification distortion correction, and low pupil sensitivity (kidney bean effect) for daytime use. While sharpness is inherent to the optical design itself, the contrast is maximized through the intelligent use of flat finished baffles and ultra low reflectance, high efficiency coatings that are tuned to the composition of each lens element.

Compared to any longer focal length eyepiece (even the 13mm Ethos), the higher magnification of the 6mm Ethos provides a darker sky background, with fainter stars becoming visible and more detail showing in all deep sky objects. With its incredible 100° field, the 6mm Ethos gives you dramatic high power views that are simply not possible with a similar focal length eyepiece, no matter what telescope you use. In addition, the smaller exit pupil of the 6mm reduces eyesight limitations due to astigmatism when compared with longer focal length eyepieces.

The 6mm Ethos has concentric 1.25" and 2" barrels that allow it to be used in both 1.25" and 2" focusers and star diagonals without the need to change the diagonal or eyepiece adapter. A safety groove is machined into the 2" chrome barrel to engage your focuser thumbscrew. This will help prevent the eyepiece from falling should the thumbscrew accidentally loosen while observing. A rubber grip ring provides a sure grip in cold weather when wearing gloves or mittens.

Stars in the center look the exact same at the furthest edge of the field. It’s basically a 100% ortho. You won’t find anything better. Even some long time astronomers I know who are opticians say it’s the best 6mm ever made. I honestly don’t see how Televue improves on the ethos line optically. Only thing they can really do is increase eye relief. At the end of the day: It may hurt your wallet at first but once you see planets with this, your mind will be blown. (Posted on 8/30/2022)

This eyepiece is one of the best in the Ethos line; however, I say that and must state they are truly all great eyepieces in each focal length. But, if one has a focal length telescope where the 6-mm will perform well, this eyepiece is a sharp and will provide great image contrast. Although one may not think of 100-deg eyepieces as "planetary," this is one great planetary eyepiece, in addition to deep sky observing. (Posted on 10/7/2018)

This is the eyepiece you want to look close, very close, at the planets and moon! As usual the TeleVue quality comes shining through. I have a 10" Dobsonian and I have no problems with focusing or any other issues. You will want to use the 1.25" base inserted into the 2" collar which allows it to come into focus without any problems. I tried to use the 2" base of the eyepiece and it needed a little more travel. So when I used the 2" collar it worked just like it should. Beautiful eyepiece!
