Product Description

A couple of questions about your current mount.

Is it a German Equatorial?  Is it an Alt-Azimuth?  Can it do both?
Well, the Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 answers "yes" to all of the above questions. Not only can the Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 support a 30 pound payload in its Equatorial mode, it can also support 30 pounds PER SIDE in its Alt-Azimuth mode, and comes with two Vixen-style dovetails so you can mount two scopes immediately. The dual scope feature is particularly nice for the astronomer with multiple optical tubes and is very handy for outreach events where you have many people looking to learn about the night sky.
The Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 gives you optimal stability and pointing accuracy for a wide variety of professional photo and video equipment. It is a hybrid mount with alt-azimuth capability for general use, equatorial capability for astrophotography use, and dual-OTA mode perfect for outreach.
Stable, accurate, versatile and very portable - weighing only 33 pounds - the Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 is the perfect field mount. Supplied with a SynScan computer hand control with dual AZ/EQ firmware, it can automatically find and track 42,900+ celestial objects from its database with 5 arc minute accuracy.
Some basic AZ-EQ5 features:
  • German equatorial/Alt-Az/dual OTA mode.
  • +/- 5 arc seconds native periodic error. Permanent periodic error correction (PPEC) available to further reduce the periodic error for astrophotography. The PPEC can be trained using an autoguider or PC.
  • Belt drive – Super smooth PE curve. Low backlash, silent slewing.
  • Dual shutter release control for batch exposures of astrophotography.
  • Motor controller with high torque and accuracy.
  • Includes two V-style saddles for mounting dual OTAs
  • Secure-fit power supply connections.
  • Polar alignment with optional polar scope.
  • Dual encoders track the mount's position. Users can push the mount to any part of the sky at any time without worrying about losing the mount's alignment.
  • Counterweight extension bar included.
  • Retractable counterweight bar.
  • Includes two 7.5 pound counterweights.

Have owned this mount for a little under a year. First use was to drive it to Arizona for a month to escape the northern winter. Coupled with a small ED refractor and CCD this was the perfect package to start making the move to digital astronomy. Mount was easy to transport, set up and align with a minimum of manual use. Definitely would recommend! (Posted on 10/4/2019)

Excellent small photo platform for beginners in equatorial mode. Excellent small outreach mount in alt-az. Just a little too short of a Tripod for standing visual though. Made a small washer adapter and put it on a surveyor Tripod for visual / outreach. (Posted on 10/4/2019)

I have been using the SkyWatcher AZ EQ5 GT for just under a year. I have 3 other mounts that I have used over the last 25 years. My first EQ mount was a non- goto GM8 that I bought in 1998. It was heavy but still got used a lot. I then acquired an 8SE and SE mount. Very easy to use but lacked full astrophotography potential. Enter the SkyWatcher AZ EQ5 GT. Now I can run my 3 OTA's (an 80ED, an 8 SCT, and my new SW 120ED)all on this mount in up to 3 possible configurations .... AZ mode for just visual, EQ mode for astrophotography , and dual scopes for Outreach. I most ifter run dual mode with the 8in SCT on the right, and the 120ED on the left. People love it. They can see the difference each scope brings to the hobby. This mount is light and I, even at 73, can get this baby out in 2 trips. I just remove the counterweights and go. It is dead belt driven silent. Tracks really well. I use the software polar align feature as I cannot see Polaris from my hard. Dead on for easy 2 minute unguided subs. I have guided using PHD2 easily up to 5 minutes. I did order the pier extension which for my 120ED is a godsend on my back. Super easy and small to transport to my clubs dark sky site. Some criticism is directed to this scope saying it's not an EQ6R Pro .... not it is not. But it weighs so much less that you can actually enjoy yourself doing a setup as often as you want. No back breaking lifting required. Yes stay below the 30lb limit in EQ mode. In AZ mode I am hanging both of my larger scopes and its still quiet without strain. At an Outreach or Sidewalk Public outing I look like a Battleship and in once shot my viewers can see clearly what F10 shows versus F5 on the same object. I am like an instant learning center. This is a very well build product. Sky-Watcher got together a pack of great features at this mount. The most noticeable, indeed, it is its unique characteristic that allows the mount be used as an equatorial/german mount, and as an ALT-AZ mount. Using at the EQ mode, it allows anyone begin to take astrophotos very seriously. And at the ALT-AZ mode, you can use it with to scope mount on parallel, which permits different seeings for the same objects, and it is very useful at star parties.
And all these features are put together in a very sturdy and well built mount, operated with an easy learning hand computer. After some practice with its routine (assembling, polar alignment, star alignment, searching and tracking) it becomes automatic the operation, and you can extract the most from this mount.
Spend the nights under dark skies listening to the motor´s quite silence motors searching and tracking for objects it is quite a relaxing moment. ;) (Posted on 10/8/2018)
