This 50mm 2” Takahashi eyepiece is a big eyepiece in every way – big in size (5” long), big in weight (20 oz.), big in eye relief (25mm), and big in optical performance. It has the high contrast, low ghosting, flat field, and excellent edge to edge image sharpness for which classical four-element Abbe-type orthoscopic eyepieces are famous. However, its modern proprietary five-element design has a 50° apparent field of view that is markedly wider than the 40-42° field typical of even the best conventional orthos.
If you have a scope f/8 to f/15, one that’s capable of using a 2” eyepiece, the 50mm Takahashi may be just the low power eyepiece you’re looking for. It’s excellent for scanning open clusters, picking up subtle detail in large low surface brightness emission and reflection nebulas like the North American, sweeping the Milky Way star clouds in Sagittarius and nebular remnants like the Veil, etc. The 50mm Takahashi provides outstanding low power images with f/8 and longer telescopes of every optical type – refractors, reflectors, Schmidt-Cassegrains, Maksutovs, and more.
