New Lower price! The optical innovations of the new Zeiss Victory 8 x 32FL T* LT binocular make it one midsized binocular that is bright enough to use even in low light and twilight conditions. It is light enough at 19.75 ounces to carry all day long without tiring. And it is small enough to slip inside your suitcase without taking up any major space when traveling.

The new Zeiss 8x32mm FL binocular combines a whole series of optical advances to create a truly state-of-the-art midsized binocular. New LotuTec optical coatings repel oil and water for clearer, sharper images in all weather conditions. Its innovative Advanced Optics System (AOS) uses an environmentally-friendly thin lens technology that gives you higher optical performance in a lighter-weight body than ever before. Special extra-low dispersion Fluoride glass (FL) lens elements provide outstanding edge definition and minimal color fringing. Colors are true to life, bright and crisp.

The Zeiss 8 x 32 FL has very low astigmatism, curvature of field, and barrel distortion. Its images stay remarkably sharp and usable to the edges of the very wide 8° field. Its 4mm exit pupil gives bright images in the low light of dusk or woodland birding, without wasting light in bright seeing conditions. This Zeiss 8 x 32mm is truly a superb and easy-to-handle binocular for those who want the sharpest and brightest possible images from a medium size binocular, particularly for close-in birding in tricky lighting situations.

Features of this binocular . . .

  • Lightweight body: The 19.75 ounce body of this lightweight and rugged internal center focus H-body roof prism binocular is made of die-cast magnesium. It is covered in noise- and shock-absorbing black rubber armor, with forest green armor available on special order. Ribs on the armored barrels, where the palms and fingers fall naturally, provide a sure grip in wet weather. The 4.6” long body is ergonomically designed for remarkably low weight, good balance, and easy handling.

  • Advanced Optics System design: Resolution, contrast, and color fidelity are all unsurpassed. The unique and innovative Advanced Optics System (AOS) provides extremely high brightness and edge sharpness. The system uses higher-transmission non-mirrored Abbe-Koenig image-erecting prisms (instead of conventional Pechan-type roof prisms that have light losses due to their aluminized or silvered reflecting surfaces). Abbe-Koenig prisms have about 5% higher light transmission than standard Pechan prisms. Combined with the system’s full multicoatings, these high transmission prisms give the Zeiss Victory FL greater than 90% total light transmission (up to 7% higher light throughput than other premium binoculars) for the highest light transmission of any binocular in its class. Special internal baffling also results in less stray light, yielding higher contrast. The objective lenses use new Fluoride glass that contains neither lead nor arsenic, so production is environmentally friendly. The extra-low dispersion Fluoride glass gives fully-saturated and true-to-life colors. Lenses in this new optical design are thinner than conventional lenses, which lowers overall weight.

  • Fully multicoated: All optical elements are fully multicoated with patented and proprietary Zeiss T* (T-Star) antireflection coatings for maximum light transmission.

  • Phase coated: P* (P-Star) phase-correcting optical coatings on the image-erecting prisms provide very high contrast and resolution. This is particularly visible when looking sunwards, where more color and detail is clearly visible in the shadowed areas of backlit or silhouetted birds. Phase coatings are actually a Zeiss innovation – one that has been imitated, but never duplicated, by other binocular manufacturers.

  • Fully waterproof and fogproof: Nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be fogproof in all temperature extremes and waterproof to a depth of 3 meters (10 feet) for a period of one day. Inert nitrogen filling also prevents the internal formation of fungus in high humidity climates, such as rain forests. The 8x32mm Victory FL is designed to operate reliably over a wide temperature and humidity range – from Attu to Death Valley, from the Serengeti Plains to Costa Rica.

  • LotuTec water-repelling lens coatings: All external optical surfaces (eyepieces and objective lenses) are treated with permanent “LotuTec” coatings. These special hydrophobic (water-repelling) coatings are so smooth, even at the molecular level, that water can find virtually no grip on the lens surfaces. This causes the condensation from rain, fog, snow, or your own breath to form in much smaller droplets than on standard optical coatings. Smaller droplets scatter less light, resulting in higher light transmission and a clearer image. Oil, dirt, and grease are similarly repelled, making for simplified, streak-free cleaning.

  • Wide field: At 8°, the field of view is quite wide for an 8x binocular.

  • Good close focus: The 6.5’ close focus is very good, making this an excellent binocular for butterflies and close-in birding.

  • Twist-up eyecups: The twist-up rubber-rimmed eyecups have four clickstops to let you customize the good 16mm of eye relief to match your eyesight. Vignetting is minor for those who must wear eyeglasses while observing.

  • Intelligently Tuned Focusing: The Intelligently Tuned Focusing system takes less than one and a quarter turns of the comfortably-large focus knob to move the internal center focus from a 6.5’ near focus to the horizon. Pulling back on the large ribbed focus knob reveals the continuously-variable diopter correction collar. Turn the focus knob to adjust the diopter to match your eyesight, and then push forward on the focus knob to lock in the diopter correction.

  • Included accessories: The Zeiss Victory FL comes with a water-shedding padded Cordura nylon case that has both a removable wide shoulder strap and belt loops for no-hands carrying. There is a zippered mesh pocket inside the case to hold car keys, credit cards, etc. Tethered, but removable, objective lens covers are standard, as is an eyepiece rainguard. The wide cloth-covered neoprene neck strap is uniquely contoured to fit comfortably around your neck without chafing during extended use.

Optical Type:
The optical design of a binocular or spotting scope. A binocular can be either a porro prism (whose objective lenses are off-set and spaced further apart than the eyepieces) or a roof prism (whose objective lenses are in line with the eyepieces). A spotting scope can be either a porro prism or roof prism refractor or a catadioptric (a combination of lenses, mirrors, and prisms).

The field of view (FOV) is the amount of observable world one can see at any given moment.
Field of view 1000 yards:

Exit Pupil:
The circular image or beam of light formed by the eyepiece of a telescope. To take full advantage of a scope's light-gathering capacity, the diameter of an eyepiece exit pupil should be no larger than the 7mm diameter of your eye's dark-adapted pupil, so that all of the light collected by the telescope enters your eye. (The eyepiece exit pupil diameter is found by dividing the eyepiece focal length by the telescope focal ratio.) Your eye's ability to dilate declines with increasing age (to a dark-adapted pupil of about 5mm by age 50 or so). For those in this age group, eyepieces with exit pupils larger than their eyes can dilate to simply waste their telescope's light-gathering capacity, as some of the scope's light will fall on their iris instead of entering their eye.
4mm
Relative Brightness:
A number used to compare the brightness of binoculars or spotting scopes of similar magnification. The relative brightness is determined by squaring the diameter of the exit pupil. The larger the relative brightness number, the brighter the image.
16
Twilight Factor:
A number used to compare the effectiveness of binoculars or spotting scopes used in low light. The twilight factor is found by multiplying the size of the objective lens (in mm) by the magnification and then finding the square root of that result. The larger the twilight factor, the more detail you can see in low light. A twilight factor of 17 or better if usually required for reasonable low light use.
16
Eye Relief:
Eye relief is the distance from the last surface of the eye lens of an eyepiece to the plane behind the eyepiece where all the light rays of the exit pupil come to a focus and the circular image is formed, sometimes called the “Ramsden Disk.” This is where your eye should be positioned to see the full field of view of the eyepiece. If you must wear glasses because of astigmatism, you’ll usually need at least 15mm of eye relief or longer if you want to see the full field of view with your glasses on.

A note on our eye relief figures: Quite often, our eye relief figures will differ from those of the manufacturer. This is because we measure the “usable” eye relief, while the manufacturers specify their usually-longer (but technically correct) “designed” eye relief.

The eye lens of the eyepiece is normally recessed below the rubber eyeguard or rubber rim of the eyepiece to keep the lens from being scratched during use. An eyepiece might have a “designed” eye relief of 15mm (and the eye relief will truly measure 15mm from the eye lens to where the image forms). However, if the eye lens is recessed 3mm below the eye guard, the Ramsden Disk forms only 12mm above the eyepiece body (the 15mm “designed” eye relief, less the 3mm of eye relief made unusable by having the eye lens recessed into the body of the eyepiece). This “usable” eye relief of 12mm (measured from the rolled-down eyeguard – the closest point you can get your eye to the eye lens – to where the image forms) is the eye relief figure we would measure and list in this website.

Why is it important to list the “usable” eye relief? For those people who don’t wear eyeglasses while observing, a few mm difference between the eye relief they expect from the manufacturer’s literature and the shorter eye relief they actually get in real life doesn’t mean a lot. They can simply move a little closer to the eyepiece to see the full field, and never realize that the eye relief is a little shorter than they expected. However, some people must wear eyeglasses while observing, because of severe astigmatism. These observers can’t move closer to the eyepiece if the eye relief is shorter than expected because their glasses get in the way. For these people, the real life “usable” eye relief is more important than the technically correct but sometimes not fully usable “designed” eye relief. We measure and list the actual usable eye relief so that people in the real world can pick the eyepieces that will work best for them.

Armored:
A binocular or spotting scope whose body is clad in rubber or polyurethane armor is said to be armored.
