Product Description

This 82° 14mm Explore Scientific is an exceptional medium focal length/ultra wide field eyepiece with an unusual benefit. It is O-ring sealed and argon-purged to be 100% waterproof. This prevents internal fogging in the eyepiece; keeps the interior dust-and fungus-free; and makes it easier to clean, as there is no risk of excess cleaning solution getting trapped between the lenses.

The latest computer design programs have been used to optimize its performance. Its seven element/four group design uses low dispersion and high refractive index lenses and full multicoatings for high contrast, high resolution, and flat field images across a very wide 82° field of view. The lens edges have been blackened to improve contrast.

The 14mm 82° Explore Scientific works with any type of telescope, from a fast focal ratio Dobsonian reflector to a long focal ratio achromatic refractor. Its wide field makes observing through it feel like you're looking through a "picture window on space" rather than through an eyepiece, particularly with fast focal ratio/short focal length scopes such as fast apo refractors or Dobsonian reflectors.

A 10" f/4.5 Dobsonian reflector will have a 1° field at 82x with this eyepiece. This gives you a full four minutes to observe as an object drifts from one side of the sharp field of view to the other before you have to reposition the scope. A 4" f/7 refractor like the Explore Scientific 102mm will have a 1.6° field (over three times the diameter of the full Moon) at 51x. You can use the calculator in the "formula" tab above to see just how wide the field will be with your particular telescope.

At 15mm, the eye relief is surprisingly good, although eyeglass wearers will still see a somewhat vignetted image. This isn't as much a problem as you might think, as the 82° field of view is so wide that even non-eyeglass wearers have trouble seeing the whole field at once. This is an eyepiece that shows you a "picture window view" of space for a true full-immersion observing experience. With its unconstricted view, your eye relaxes, allowing you to easily use the "averted vision" technique to study faint details across a huge field of view.

The eyepiece has a soft fold-down rubber eyecup and comes with dust covers for both ends of the eyepiece.

A 1.25" eyepiece with an 82 degree apparent field of view...what's not to like? I have been pleased with the views this eyepiece provides in both my SCT's and APO's. I noticed a bit of distortion when used for terrestrial viewing, but I have never noticed any under the stars (its intended purpose). Bought this 14mm after trying one at a star party in my C9. It's my favorite all rounder for just about anything. Enough power for good low power views of planets, globs, PNs but still enough fov to put into context. As sharp as my orthos on axis and decent eye relief. I'll never sell this one. This is about the widest field of view you can get in a 1.25" barrel. The bonus is you get this field at a mid power. I have been pleased with the contrast and sharpness of the views. No real problems with the eyepiece or views. For each of the 6" f/6 and f/5 scopes I made for my sons, I included a 14mm and 4.7mm. The two make a nice eyepiece set. (Posted on 8/14/2019)

The 14mm was my first ES ocular, and at first I was somewhat put-off by it's tight eye relief; I really had to dig-in with my peeper and I still could not view the field stop. Well, I've had the 14mm for some time now, and I've used it in a number of Refractors and Maks, and this ocular time and time again gives me my best views most sessions. Good with Globs and brighter nebula, as well with planetary, the ES 14mm 82 is a well rounded ocular that fits many roles. Contrasty with good sharpness, and does quite well out to the edges with the Short 80.

I have the ES 82 14, 8.8 and 6.7 and consider these as my main eyepieces. I may add the 4.7 in the future. I use them in my Apertura AD12/F5, Orion XT8i, F5.9, Meade ETX 125/F15 and 80/F5, and an Orion SkyScanner 100/F4. I also use them in a Meade LX200 14" at the Custer Observatory, Southold, NY. I am hard pressed to tell the difference between an ES 82 degree eyepiece and a Nagler, and this one is no exception. Although 100 degrees is great, 82 still gives you a "spacewalk" feeling. Eye relief and eye placement made it slightly uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time though. (Posted on 1/14/2019)

This was the first eyepiece I purchased that had a greater than 52-deg FOV. I used it first in my AR127 f/6.5 and ST80 achros, and I fully enjoyed the wide FOV. In the summer I purchased this eyepiece, it was a joy to have Jupiter and Saturn in the field of view for a longer time, and not have to nudge my scope so often. I could really enjoy the view for much longer. The clarity is good pretty much to the edges in my scopes, especially in my 180mm f/15 mak-cass. A superb mid power eyepiece. The 14mm fits my medium power range very well. Clean views of globulars and open clusters snd frames the amazingly. I would be very happy with the 14mm and one higher mag and one lower power ep and be very happy. Having an ep with an 82 ° afov is a entirely new to me and has me hooked. With my Evolution 8 Edge HD, this eyepiece is great with globular clusters, closer views of the moon, and is very good as my highest power EP on nights when seeing will only support magnifications up to around 150x. It is also excellent (actually my preferred EP) in my PST solar scope when viewing mono-vision. Eye relief would be tight for glasses wearers, which I am not. The eye lens is recessed some and concave, requiring one to place the eye down onto the eyecup to see the full field of view. But this rewards with an immersive experience with the 82* AFOV. In my slow scopes, it shows good clarity, sharp across the field, neutral color, excellent light transmission. There are a lot of good eyepieces out there, and this is one of them. This is my go-to medium power eyepiece. It's perfect for that first "Found it!" view of many objects, as it provides sufficient telescopic field of view to fully display most deep sky objects. But beyond that, it's great for outreach. The long eye relief and wide apparent field of view make it easy for most first-time observers to place their eye and comfortably view whatever it is I've got in the eyepiece at the time.
