Product Description

This 82° 28mm Astro-Tech UWA eyepiece is an excellent low/medium power ultra wide field eyepiece with an outstanding price.

Many observers feel that a 82° field eyepiece like this Astro-Tech hits the "sweet spot" between the affordable, but "looking down a tube" view of conventional 45°-50° field eyepieces, and the full-immersion, but very expensive, observing experience of an ultra-wide field premium 82° or 100° eyepiece.

The optical designers used the latest computer design programs to optimize its performance. Its seven element/four group design uses low dispersion and high refractive index lenses and full multicoatings for high contrast, high resolution, and flat field images across a very wide 82° field of view. The lens edges have been blackened to improve contrast.  The eyepieces are parfocal within the UWA series.

The 2" 28mm Astro-Tech is designed for the serious deep space explorer - no matter what your telescope type. For example, the 28mm Explore Scientific will give you a 1.15 degree field at 71x with the 2000mm focal length of either a big 17.5" f/4.5 Dobsonian or an 8" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain. That's almost two lunar diameters and is ideal for observing emission and reflection nebulas and nebula remnants.

A 10" f/4.5 Dobsonian reflector will have a full 2.01° field at 40x with this eyepiece, able to encompass all of the Pleiades in one field. Even an 8" f/10 catadioptric will have a field almost one and a half lunar diameters across, able to encompass the full Moon with room to spare, the Orion Nebula, and many globular clusters, as well.

At 18mm, the eye relief is good, although eyeglass wearers might still see a somewhat vignetted image. This isn't as much a problem as you might think, as the 82° field of view is so wide that even non-eyeglass wearers have trouble seeing the whole field at once. This is an eyepiece that shows you a "lost in space" view of space for a true full-immersion observing experience. With its unconstricted view, your eye relaxes, allowing you to easily use the "averted vision" technique to study faint details across a huge field of view.

The eyepiece has a soft fold-down rubber eyecup and comes with dust covers for both ends of the eyepiece.

I was skeptical of this eyepiece given the price but the reviews were good so I went for it. When it first arrived, I was amazed by the heft and size. However, under bright daylight, it was disappointing. The typical "ring of fire" for this style of ultra-wide was very apparent, and there was strong blackouts / kidney effect. However, I got to try it at night last night which completely changed my mind. Stars were very sharp. Color seemed quite accurate. With the paracor in place, the edges were very nice. There was nothing really not to like. This will probably be my goto low power eyepiece for now on. (Posted on 2/16/2024)

Great value and my most used eyepiece in my 9.25” sct. Sharp images through to the edge, crystal clear! Darkens the background and showcases the stars and nebulas! Highly recommend . (Posted on 2/4/2024)

I had a Tele Vue Panoptic 27mm eyepiece on backorder, and it wasn't expected to ship until maybe March. So I cancelled the order and I purchased this eyepiece instead. WOW! I am soooo glad I did. This eyepiece is amazing. The view is like having your own portal into space. It literally feels like you have your nose pressed to the window of space itself. The view is precision sharp edge to edge. This eyepiece was also $150 LESS than the Tele Vue, and it has a larger FOV! If you're in the market for a low power 2" eyepiece, I highly recommend this one!! (Posted on 1/23/2024)

Recently purchased this eyepiece after reading reviews on the Cloudy Nights website. I tried it out recently in my 16.5" f3.65 Starmaster Dobsonian (Lockwood mirror). The views were perfect when using a Paracorr II coma corrector. I could not ask for a better eyepiece. Best $200 I have ever spent on an eyepiece. (Posted on 12/15/2023)

What an incredible value. This widefield views are breathtaking. Super sharp, pinpoint stars across the entire field. The eyepiece is really comfortable and easy to see the entire 82° field. Nice solid construction, but not as heavy as other high-end eyepieces. I love it. (Posted on 11/2/2023)

The 28mm Astro-Tech UWA is a surprisingly good 2" eyepiece at a rather economical price. I've used mine in a number of telescopes of varying apertures and designs and have been very impressed with the results. (Posted on 11/6/2022)

I've read that this eyepiece is "great for the money". I would submit that it is great, period. I cannot believe such a great eyepiece is only $200.00. I compared it to my Explore Scientific 82 degree, 30mm eyepiece and as a result, I sold the Explore Scientific. This Astro-Tech eyepiece weighs about a pound less than the Explore Scientific and puts up identical views....I love the lighter weight. Thank you Astronomics for bringing this eyepiece to market! Being cheaper, lighter, and equal optically to my late ES82 30mm. It was a hard choice. But the AT 28mm UWA won in the end.

While some more experienced observers may critique tougher and prefer other excellent offerings, this eyepeice is great!

Looking at a low power eyepiece in the 82° FOV range. I don't think you can get anything better than the AT 28mm without spending 3-4 times the cost.

Thank you to Astronomics for bringing us great equipment at great prices. (Posted on 6/7/2022)
