Product Description

This dew shield fits the Celestron 8" NexStar 8SE Schmidt-Cassegrain. It has a notch cut into it to clear the mounting dovetail on the side of the removable NexStar 8SE optical tube. This gives the dew shield a smoother and tighter fit to prevent air and light leaks.

The Astrozap dew shield/lens shade is made of lightweight, flexible, and durable black ABS plastic, lined with black felt to absorb both moisture and light. Aside from retarding the formation of dew during nighttime observing, it acts as a lens shade to block neighboring lights and provide a sharper and higher contrast image when doing astronomical observing from a light-polluted city or suburban site.

Simply wrap the Astrozap around the optical tube's front cell, making sure the notch aligns with the dovetail bar. The ends of the dew shield overlap and Velcro strips on the overlapping ends hold it firmly closed in a tubular shape. The Velcro closures are sewn in place for durability. A two-inch rubber trim inside the dew shield clasps the telescope optical tube front cell snugly to prevent any slippage of the dew shield during use.

Storage is easy. You can roll the Astrozap up like a newspaper and fasten it with a rubber band or string to stand out of the way in the back of a closet when not in use. Alternatively, you can store it open and flat in the top of your telescope carrying case or standing on end out of the way in the back of a closet.

This was one of the first accessories I bought for my 8" SCT because my dark sky site can get dewey. It does the job of keeping the dew off, and I also use it when it's not dewey to keep out any errant light. It makes a difference when observing faint deep sky objects. Can be rolled up or stored flat, and is easy to transport. (Posted on 10/6/2018)

A dew shield is an important addition to the amateur astronomer's equipment. I use a Nexstar 8 SE and purchased the Astrozap to combat problems with dew in winter and to shield my scope from nearby streetlights. This is a great product. With the slot and velcro strip, it fits snugly and holds well. The inner surface is soft black cloth (felt?) which absorbs dew and prevents reflections. Moreover, the flexible, lightweight design makes it very easy to transport. (Posted on 8/4/2017)

If you have an SCT, you will definitely need a dew shield and this is a great choice. It is a very durable, yet nice and flexible plastic. The inside is lined with a soft, black material (maybe felt). There is a thin foam grip at the base that nicely secures the shield to your OTA. When properly affixed to the OTA, this shield will not shift or slip. I took my time and installed it to a perfect fit and now I keep it that shape all the time, and all I do is just shimmy it onto the OTA before every observing session. The velcro is nice and strong, so if you want to take this approach, there is no risk of the velcro losing its grip over time.

It works very well, even on really damp nights. If you tend to observe for several hours at a time, you may want to look for one that is heated (or you can add heated straps later on if you decide), but I can only usually get out for 2 to 3 hours at a time, so this is perfect for me. This is a very solid dew shield and it even looks great when strapped to the shimmering orange tube of the 8 SE! (Posted on 8/4/2017)
