Product Description
The Starbase 80 is Takahashi's first entry level refractor. The Starbase 80 is made in Japan under contract with Takahashi at a factory in Hanamaki, Japan. Takahashi would not put their legendary name behind any product, or company, that they didn't believe in. From lens coating to final assembly, the telescope is constructed by the skilled craftsmen of Hanamaki.
The telescope uses the classic color combination we have all come to expect from Takahashi, so the scope is instantly recognizable. The best part about the Starbase 80 is that it is a complete scope at an unheard of price for a Takahashi backed product. The Starbase 80 comes with lightweight 8.2 pound Alt / Azimuth mount with dual slow motion controls and adjustable height legs. Accessory wise the scope is complete as well. It comes with a star diagonal and two orthoscopic eyepieces. The telescope has a peep-site for lining up brighter objects, but you will need to look at the optional 6x30mm from Starbase if you want a traditional finder.
The 80mm f/10 achromatic optical tube will provide you pleasing views of the moon and planets as well as some of the brighter deep space objects. Spurious color should be well controlled in this doublet system.
This might be the perfect grab and go system if you are looking for a classic telescope look and a longer focal length small refractor.
